Modest Mouse – Ansel Lyrics 12 years ago
I'd like to say that this is totally incorrect, and it's about his brother, who obviously was killed in some mountain climbing incident or something. His death was part of the inspiration for their Good News album.

King Krule – Has This Hit Lyrics 12 years ago
"Another disappointed soul
Well I try
I try to keep it in control
Well I
I will end up on the dole
It's my life
And now fall into it I go

Well Blue, you've got me on the go
So don't worry
You'll never know
Your eyes
Are never cold
To me
Well at least that's what I was told"

I feel like this is Archy's essential break up song. In the first two verses, he summarizes his relationship with this Blue girl, it's a constantly changing and hectic one, and Archy is finding himself disappointed as he realizes that it's spiraling into something out of his grasp. He's doing all he can to save this relationship and keep her with him, but even he's beginning to doubt if he loves her anymore -- "your eyes are never cold to me, at least that's what I'm told."

"Girl
You made
My dreams come true
It's all a clue
It's all for you

Myself is still eighteen
In cue
And it's all
That I want to do"

I love the emotion in his voice in these verses, as well as the ones that follow them. He sounds so distressed and angry, bitterly singing about how Blue used to make his dreams come true. He's tried and tried to stay with her, but this is his final clue that maybe things are really done. Whether or not it's her fault or his, he doesn't say, but he brings up his youth as a sort of defense, trying to excuse his mistakes.

"I know when I look into the sky
There is no meaning
And I'm the only one believing
That there's nothing to believe in

I'm dreaming
My aspirations got a ceiling
And now I'm constantly cleaning
The skies you're dealing"

Definitely my favourite part of the song. Archy feels no emotion when he sees something beautiful, like the sky. He feels empty, almost nihilistic, claiming that there's nothing to believe in, and he feels alone in this philosophy, and even when thinking about his future and his dreams, he sets limits for himself, and refuses to allow his hopes to get too high. And Blue, this girl, is dealing skies, much like the sky that Archy finds no beauty in, as well as the one that relates to this saying: "the sky's the limit." At one point, Blue made him feel like anything was possible, like he could accomplish whatever he wanted, but now that they've been torn apart, Archy's cleaning out all those ideas of optimism that she left in his head.

"Well my guts are on the floor
For you to adore me
And all I can be"

This is a good summation of the last few very personal verses. Archy has finally admitted all of this, and perhaps, despite the bitterness and the doubt and the hate, he still craves the feelings Blue gave him, and hopes that somehow, she will hear him spilling his guts about her, and see he still has feelings about her, and just maybe, she might return them.

I'm pretty sure the last half changes perspective to a grander scale, but keeps within the theme of feelings of betrayal and loss and general dislike of everybody around him.

Possibly about Ansel Adams? I imagine him and Isaac would share the same ideals -- both hate seeing peaceful, beautiful scenes of nature being destroyed for civilization.

Modest Mouse – Four Fingered Fisherman Lyrics 13 years ago
Eleventy has got it spot on, but for the two parts he didn't get: The weeds pulling weeds part and the all night long part

Weeds pulling weeds is one of Isaac's many self defeating patterns that he loves so much. It's basically something bad getting rid of something else that's bad, such as drinking because you're sad about your alcoholism, or doing drugs to get over the fact that doing drugs has ruined your life. The fisherman is basically blaming himself and using that to feel better about himself.

Then the all night long is, I think, saying that everyone is like this fisherman. The entire human race are four fingered fishermen all night long, or constantly, making poor excuses for feeling upset about stupid things.

Patrick Watson – Mary Lyrics 13 years ago
I may as well just add how I think the lyrics go while I'm at it.

As she walks through the door
With her hair in the wind
She's my golden girl

In a beautiful world,
with her hair in the wind
she's my go there girl

There goes Mary walkin' down on a sunny road to Heaven
passin' right past all the Gods with a smile and a short remark
She looks back once and she laughs out loud
She turns her head and she gets back
To the original mission

There's a castle built on the clouds
Just like momma used to read to you about
She walks out to the door, a strange noise twists open
And the wind changed her smile with precision

Then a man walks out the door
Takes her hand and says he wants to see more

Shakes her head and she turns away
Shakes another then she flies away
'Cause all she's lookin' for is a place
A place where everything's okay

Place where she can rest her head

And all she's lookin' for is a place

Rest her head...
Rest her head...
Rest her head...

Patrick Watson – Mary Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the song is simply about an optimistic young girl who realizes that the world isn't really all that great.

"In a beautiful world, with her hair in the wind, she's my golden girl"
It starts off happy enough, Patrick talking about how he loves her so and her being his 'golden girl'. He then cuts to the story itself;

"There goes Mary walking down on a sunny road, to heaven" She's so happy! Her cheeriness is so great she may as well be walking straight to Heaven.

The castle built on the cloud could be Mary's idealism getting the best of her. She's comparing what may just be a beautiful manor to stories her mother used to tell her. She goes up to visit it.
"And she changed her smile with precision"
A.K.A. She went straight from a smile to a frown.
"Then the man walks out the door
Takes her hand and tells her he wants to see more
Shakes her head and turns away
Shakes, and she climbs away"
The man who lived in the beautiful house turned out to only want one thing: sex. This shatters Mary's happy view on life, and she runs away. The whole realization of the imperfectness of life does a large toll on her.

"All she's lookin' for is a place
A place where everything is okay
A place where she can rest her head"
So weary. She just wants to go back to her old self, where everything was okay and nice.

I love this song! Patrick never disappoints.

Ugly Casanova – Diamonds on the Face of Evil Lyrics 14 years ago
The beat to this song always reminded me of a person, bound in chains, marching endlessly. He has somewhere to go, but cannot ever reach it, due to his bonds.
