Eldroch , as this song is one of your favourites , i'm surprised that you didnt know that Andrew Eldritch's sole contribution to the song was the vocal. It was in fact a sole Gary Marx songwriting credit for both words and music. |

This concerns the death of the initial uk punk rock movement and is suitably frazzled and deranged enough to act as a stepping stone from punk to post or progressive punk. |

The subject matter is obvious but definitely a lyrical off-day for Nicky Wire on this one. He has dealt with sensitive issues many times , always delivering a satirical and insightful bite to his words but here , something clearly went wrong resulting in arguably the worst lyric in a Manics song. You could argue that it is a description of the speechless frustration surrounding the tragedy but the lyric is almost too bizarre in it's terminal resignation and utter lack of conviction or commitment. This is a subject that demands themes of justice and optimism. |

This song must have felt like a sledgehammer in the face in 1977. One of the last songs composed by the band , it is easily and obviously their finest hour. Of their repertoire , this contained the least rock n roll and traditional elements , instead bludgeoning the listener with a blistering sonic assault that blew away the light , tinny sound of that era's punk bands. Considering the band's popularity and media presence at the time , the savage , visceral imagery of the lyrics combined with the subject matter itself was a brave step. This was no cartoonlike God save the Queen or Anarchy in the UK and was supposedly inspired by a poor lost soul who John Lydon had met. It even survived the questionable bass playing contributions of dear old Sidney. If it had been a single , it's impact would have been unprecedented. |

Most probably a comment on the competitive Seattle music scene of the time. However , Kurt Cobain always stated that the lyrics were secondary to the music in terms of importance to a song. It seems somewhat dubious to read more into what amounts to three lines of lyric repeated to the point of irritation. It was also said that many of the lyrics stemming from the Bleach era were nothing more than last minute choices of phrase that fitted the song structures. This seems to be another case of the pedestal on which the artist is placed obscuring the faults of lesser material. It seems reasonable to suggest that if these lyrics had been written by any other artist , they would have barely been mentioned. |

Strange as it may seem , it has been suggested that some of the lyrics were a thickly veiled dig at the mystical imagery and grandiose themes of Echo & the Bunnymen at the time. Nevertheless , the lyrics , certainly open to several interpretations , are brutally uncompromising and fatalistic. It was said that Ian Curtis was in a trance-like state when he wrote the majority of the lyrics for the Closer album with little editing or rewriting. It does seem that the keyboards in this song have been deliberately crafted to evolve from the horrendously dated churning stabs of the verses into the sweeping majesty of the choruses which feature possibly the most resigned and forlorn melody ever. |

Although the lyrics are well crafted and the melody is unforgettable, this song always struck me as curiously unfinished. The vocals, bass & keyboard following the same melody, particularly in the chorus, seems unjustified. It remains a great song but with more development, it could have been epic. |

Like other tracks on Metamatic, heavily influenced by the subversive delights of jg ballard's Crash and the Atrocity Exhibition. An ice cold electric classic. |
