| Converge – On My Shield Lyrics

I think it is safe to say that "Die on my shield" is a reference to the Spartan oath which their wives said as they left for war, to either come home with your shield or on it. The implication being that a warrior in retreat would shed off as much gear as possible to make the flight faster and the shield was the first thing to go. So the women were really saying, "victory or death."
By extension, I think that he is saying that he will hold his ground but will eventually fall in "love's war". |

This song appears to expand on thoughts from Benedict Anderson's book "Imagined Communities" which sets forth the notion of nationalism as a cultural and social issue.

In the case of Royal Dutch Shell, they are citing a specific incident in which Ken Saro-Wiwa, a Nigerian Ogoni, was sentenced to death by hanging mostly because of his nonviolent protest of petroleum company activities in Nigeria. After his guilty verdict and those of 8 others (The Ogoni 9), most of the key witnesses recanted stating that Shell had offered them jobs and payment for their testimony. "...they didn't want me hanging around"
His memorial in London is in the shape of a bus. "I took the first bus to Shell town..." |

In this song, "corazon" is a polysemic reference to Lorca's full name which was Federico del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús GarcÃa Lorca. Lorca was killed as a leftist and purported homosexual. His family members were in politics and some were also executed. Lorca's death was also the subject of the Pogues song "Lorca's Novena" (which, incidentally, Strummer used on the soundtrack to Grosse Point Blank for the final showdown between the assassins).
The lyrics seem to invoke the Spanish Civil War, the IRA and ETA as a common thread of revolutionary thought. The song is noted to have its genesis in a conversation that Strummer had with his future wife about ETA.
Mockingbird Hill is a song made popular in the 50s by Les Paul.
