I disagree, obviously, about the song having just one meaning. I believe it's a song that was written as a type of guilt trip...to attempt to make the listener feel guilty for whatever s/he has supposedly done (when in actuality it's mere deflection).
The singer may or may not be simply adorable, but guilt trips don't work. And the smallest violin refuses to play today... |

LOL. What friggin' song did you listen to; rather, lyrics did you read?????? As a practicing Christian I can't find anything remotely spiritual in the song, although it's a good song. This is classic Steppenwolf and there are no comment?! Is there no one over the age of 40 on this site. Geesh. Not much in the way of lyrics, but the song is a worthy one...quite catchy. All these years every so often (like today) this song floats through my cluttered ADD mind and I can't stop singing it (poorly). If you haven't listened to Steppenwolf, you have missed out on some music history from a great decade in rock and roll. |

"To want somebody to be happy no matter how they treat you in return" is the dumbest statement on so-called love that I have EVER heard. So if they walk all over you; take advantage of you; lie to you; manipulate you; abuse you physically, emotionally, and sexually than it's OK? That's what you've said. Love is supposed to be a bond between two people that is built on loyalty; trust; and friendship. Lust is another aspect of it, but once people age/mature, the lust is viewed as so much less important than the other three. Let's face it, when we are 70 who we can talk about the weather with as we hold hands at the doctor's office means a hell of a lot more than who we can bang after taking a viagra pill without losing our dentures as we do it. Any and all couples set rules that each must live with to show respect to not only the other person and to the health of their relationship, but to themselves as well. No 'loving" relationship is based on betrayal; that's called adultry, and it's wrong in every sense of the word. |

This is hilarious. I know someone who plays this song like it's his own personal anthem. He plays it whenever he's been cornered about being a diseased sleazeball who uses young, clueless men. All he is is a sex machine...nothing of any value but how he completes the act. Toss in some booze and razorblades and coke and that's the quality of man he is.
