| Laura Marling – I Was An Eagle Lyrics | 14 years ago |

So your grandmother sounds to me A woman I would be proud to be And you say she reminds you of me Every little boy is so naive Oh, I wanna be a victim of romance I will not be a victim of circumstance Chances is circumstance and romancing any man A man who could get his dirty little hands on me Oh So your grandfather sounds like me Head up, shoulders back, proud to be Every little girl is so naive Falling in love with the first man they see Oh, I wanna be a victim of romance I will not be a victim of circumstance Chance is circumstance and romancing any man A man who could get his dirty little hands on me Oh, oh When we were in love (if we were) When we were in love I was an eagle And you were a dove Today I will feel something other than regret Pass me a glass and a half-smoked cigarette I've damned near got no dignity left I've damned near got no dignity left Oh, I wanna be a victim of romance I will not be a victim of circumstance Chance is circumstance and romancing any man A man who could get his dirty little hands on me Oh, oh When we were in love (if we were) When we were in love You were a dove And I rose above you and wept When we were in love (if we were) When we were in love I was an eagle And you were a dove |

I wonder if this is about a one night stand... "Could've sworn I had that man when he took my hand, When he took my hand down near you. You were looking at me, thinking, "Who is she?" |

*post-breakup feelings Also I don't mean that I think Laura is evil, obviously. Only that she is singing about typical human sin/guilt, and seemingly responding to a religious influence. |

Sophia is the goddess of wisdom. This song is like the light to "The Beast's" shadow; here she is asking for wisdom, and guidance, from the Goddess Sophia. She is sad, and forgiving, keeping the secrets of the man she has denied and judged unworthy - although she does mention that his judgment will come, just not by her hand. In the first verses she emphasizes that it's over, and her business is none of his. I can empathize deeply with this part of the song; I think it's something that occurs to almost everyone after an important relationship ends. The "I'm wounded by dust" line is, I believe, about how the past can hurt us. Even though it's not substantial, and it's long over (dust) it still hurts. |

There's something slightly sexual about this song. "Tonight he lies with me / and here comes the beast." It makes me wonder if she's in part referring to sexual promiscuity or sin. Did you catch yourself in the mirror? It's a sight I understand You consider it all for a second And put it down to slight of hand This part, I believe, refers to looking at yourself and not recognizing what you see. When did I become that woman, she wonders? But she dismisses it, believing she imagined it. And she fancies that he looks himself in the mirror as well, and sees guilt/a change. Of course, we're all wondering how much this album is about Marcus, even if the influence is subtle and slight. There's the possibility, in this song and Sophia, that she's singing about her post-breakup songs. Add Night After Night to that list, and you get an overall theme of religious sin/moral ambiguity. We all know that Mumford and Songs sings about religion in oblique ways, and perhaps are Christian - maybe that got between them? And now she is embracing the dark/sinful side of herself, calling him out ("when the bell tolls for your last day / you'll be getting down on your knees to pray") all while she denies that she is truly evil, and calls for wisdom from an ancient non-Christian symbol. |
