its kind of like "oh okay i thought there was something here but i guess not" he's realized it was only dots he'd connected in his head, and now he has to undo some assumptions and get over the initial disappointment that it isn't going to work out. he's frustrated that love isn't easy but mostly just sad because he feels like he's never going to find it |

I think this song is about two people who have been on and off in love for a long time, soulmates maybe. They have a very passionate and romantic relationship, but its also very difficult and full of arguing. She moves on and gets married because they aren't working, but she realizes she misses him/needs him/they're soulmates and starts cheating with him. He's going back and forth between knowing its wrong, loving her, wanting her, and being angry at her for the situation. He's getting really upset and going back and forth over what to do. Lines that make me think this: -"Poetry is not a luxury, it's how I break this home" -"The ring, it nearly weighs her down" -"Oh, take me on back, take me on back, take me back" -"something really, really beautiful Wrapped up and disguised As something really really ugly" -"I break the law once every week to feel your touch, What's a book to you in bed?" -"Do you feel better? Older? This just makes me ill" I think the final verse that he repeats a lot of times is a metaphor: he is the ghost of her past, and he wants her to just leave him alone and let him sleep, because if she calls him up he will of course come to her, but he knows its not the right thing to do and it will just damage his emotions further. She needs to "close her eyes and burn the past" and accept the fact that she is now married to someone else |

I don't know if I just started thinking of this because of the dancing pregnant figure in the music video, but it seems plausible to me that they've had a baby to try to fix or hold together their complicated relationship, and its a mess because their relationship isn't working. They talk about making it for another -- making their relationship work for their baby? Looking better if they wed, something keeping them up all night, agreeing they were up for another...... Also, "This is how they wear their all" kind of reminds me of it too. Your kid is in a way what you make them, and you feel very responsible for how they turn out, so you're sort of wearing their success, wearing their all. The bleeding part I guess is pain? And they're trying their hardest but the girl is waiting around for him to come home, and mouths are suggesting its not working (maybe even the now more grown up kid?) The closing line is that they think its almost time. They've tried, its almost a crime how much pain its causing them, and maybe they don't have to try anymore because the kid is grown up. So its time for them to give up. I could be totally wrong, but that's just what came to mind/seemed clear to me. I love broken social scene so much -- I'm kind of only just starting to get to know ALL the songs but I have most of the albums and I'm already pretty much obsessed |
