The Smiths – Jeane Lyrics 14 years ago
I love both versions equally. Sandie's version is technically cleaner and better produced, because The Smiths' version was one of their first recorded songs so they didn't have the best equipment or professionals working on it with them. The lyrics are just genius, and Morrissey's backing vocals on the Shaw version are absolutely lovely.

The Smiths – Ask Lyrics 14 years ago
The first Smiths song that I truly fell in love with. Bouncy, lightweight, gorgeous voice, and the lyrics... Especially "If there's something you'd like to try, ask me, I won't say no (how could I?" because I really needed someone to say that to me. "Nature is a language, can't you read?" is also a stunning lyric.

Wallflower was lovely, but please, there's more to this band than being mentioned in some teenage angst book! The Smiths are massively marvellous.

The Smiths – Meat Is Murder Lyrics 14 years ago
I can thank this song for the vegetarian conversion, and of course all the opinions that Morrissey has expressed through interviews etc. In just 24 days, I shall be celebrating a year of being vegie!

The Smiths – Ask Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't know if someone has already said this, but I shall anyway! To me, "If it's not love, then it's the bomb that will bring us together" is about how communities bond when disaster strikes. After all the love-promoting ads and preachers, social circumstances sadly do not change. When something terrible happens, like a terrorist attack, war or environmental disaster, people unite and help each other out an incredible degree. It's not a favourable way for communites to bond, but that's what happens in real life!

The Smiths – Rubber Ring Lyrics 14 years ago
The 'rubber ring' in this song refers to the little protective ring (made of rubber of course) on the turntable of a record player. The turntable is made from metal so the rubber ring is on top of the metal turn table to protect the record from damage whilst you're playing your records. I love the double meaning that Morrissey's created: the actual rubber ring on the record player playing Smiths classics and the rubber ring that saves you when you're drowning.
