Tom Petty – Room At The Top Lyrics 10 years ago
I was surprised to see that people interpret it as a sad song. I was recently in a similar position as TP, no drugs though - just completely heartbroken. Which all came back to me when hearing it a few days ago. And to me it's more of a hopeful / defiant song and not so sad. He's finally found the way to deal with his situation and feelings, and decided to dig his heels in and defend that state - though his inside is still in a turmoil, of course.

The lines
"I got someone who loves me tonight" - someone may even be himself !?
"I got over a thousand dollars in the bank" - adjusting to reality, it's not so bad
"And I'm all right" - adjusting again, no open wounds, no broken legs :)
"Look deep in the eyes of love
Look deep in the eyes of love
And find out what you were looking for" - final readjustment, setting new goals or returning to previous goals. I couldn't have HER, but there may be someone better.

"Please love me, I'm not so bad
And I love you so " - is a heartbreaking relapse due to the inner turmoil, but he catches himself immediately with

"I got a room at the top of the world tonight
And I ain't comin' down, no I ain't comin' down" - like a mantra, I know how to deal with it. I'm not letting myself get dragged down again.

Just my two cents, it's a powerful song anyway!

Kris Kristofferson – Nobody Wins Lyrics 13 years ago
Just happened to find this version by Zarah Leander on youtube, which seems to credit text and music to someone other than Kris K. Did he write his own new text to an older song or is it a mistake?

"Zarah Leander sings: 1977 (NOBODY WINS) "NICHTS GEHT MEHR" German and Swedish lyrics by Fed Oldörp. Original music by Kim Richey, original English lyrics by Radney Foster."

Placebo – Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush cover) Lyrics 14 years ago
An old fav from Kate Bush, but I like Placebo's version even more - that increasing heartbeat-beat and more prominent voice does the trick. First heard it on an episode of Bones (the episode when her dad kills off those who target his family) - which is also a good source for finding new songs, almost every episode has some tune to google afterwards... :)

Bob Dylan – As I Went Out One Morning Lyrics 14 years ago
Of the above, I think danielss comes up with the most likely explanation of the origin of the song. Though it can probably have lots of different meanings depending on the listener, as usual with Dylan.

Personally, I see it like this:

A man goes out to be like Tom Paine (for example intellectual or revolutionary) when he suddenly meets a beautiful married woman. He tries to be correct but she wants more. He tells her to leave him alone as he doesn't want the trouble that would arise getting involved with a married woman, especially if she belongs to Tom Paine or to a friend of his.

"Depart from me this moment,"
I told her with my *voice*.
Said she, "But I don't wish to,"
Said I, "But you have no *choice*."

"I beg you, sir," she pleaded
From the corners of her **mouth**,
"I will secretly accept you
And together we'll fly **south**."

Here both the commas and the rhyme patters seems to indicate that it is **she** that says: "I beg you, sir, I will secretly accept you and together we'll fly south." - indicating that she wants to have an affair with him, but will not divorce her husband.

Then Tom Paine shows up and calls her off him (still not clear exactly what relation they have, but since she doesn't protest she must at least know him), apologizing for what she's done. i.e. tempting him to betray his cause for a unilateral temporary 'love' affair. - which also fits in with danielss' interpretation i.e. she throws herself at him much like the Tom Paine prize is forced upon Dylan, without him actually wanting either even though they may both look attractive to him...

Sex Pistols – God Save the Queen Lyrics 14 years ago
A great song. I recently heard Nouvelle Vague covering it like a normal acoustic song, and that works great as well. Hearing the chorus sung like a piece of fact with no aggression kind of underlines the message actually...
