| Well if Thom says the song is about the devil, then it is about the devil, because he wrote it. Thom Yorke is a mystical song writer and a talent extraordinaire -he gives his everything in peformance and if you look at him now, in his early 40's , he looks exhausted because he has given so much to the world of music. I would love to ask him though - what is the devil? Is it that force of evil that continually drives itself through human acts and evil perpetuates through human history to this day with no hope of it changing. of course we are frightened of its power. If we are looking at it from an existentialist viewpoint, then life seems meaningless in the face of this power and that is terrifying. But on the other hand, if you look at life as a motion of energy, creating and destroying constantly, in religious terms it is the devil versus God, or in Hindu philosophy, God is the destroyer and the Creator, -then we have to reconcile that destruction is part of life and evil is the force that makes it happen. there is no answer. we have to accept that.I think Thom in his human form, when he is not 'receiving' his music from the higher force that he admits he receives from, he like, most people, are overwhelmed by life and the fact that we are alive. Songs make meaning like poetry and like all the arts - humans like Thom Yorke and Radiohead, give us all a channel to explore all the questions and this is what Street Spirit does, it faces DEATH in the face or destruction and thne it fades out, because, yes, you cna't beat it - that acceptance is actually the force of God, it is the inevitable, when the ego cannot make anything happen anymore , the power of the individual is taken away and we must give ourselves up, to what make be, in the journey at the end of life. | |

I think the song is about celebrity and the addictive quality of it 'magnetic pull of staircase' - he wants to go back to the old life but he can't and there may be memories of someone that he associates with the old life that he yearns for The chopper is a symbol of wealth, not everyone can have a chopper he wants to send it in and get someone from the past who he loves or cares about his pot of full of experience, of life and of memories and secrets that celebrity does not own only he owns the pot of his own secrets and he can control almost everything in his life due to his celebrity but he can't control the other person who won't let him take her into his orbit but he wants to the song is deep about his current stage of life middle age he is remembering something precious of the past and that is why the song is really beautiful and a bit melancholy the high sounds at the end is the conclusion of the yearnings he cannot reach or have |
