| I think the song is about how people's expectations and their actions are at contrast. They all want you to soar "to be high" but they never help you stay aloft, they only "throw you down a rope" when you're so far down you cant see the top. And then, in contrast, if you soar to high, they drag you back down "throw you up a rope". the first two lines of the last verse contain the whole meaning. Its about two people in love going through a tough time, but its also about how life is fleeting, and while your alive you need to let people into your hearts. The story goes that one person is scared for the other "I dont mean to make you worry, its just my hands in my pockets" he means that its not a gun, or hes not going to hurt himself. Then the speaker tells the person how he feels "did you know i've been wanting you?" so "leave the locks on the latches" is kind of like "can we shut other people out for just a little while" When he talks about "we are fires in the night" he means "life is short, like matches in the dark" its a metaphor. The "let us bathe you in our heart" is pretty clear about letting people love you and loving other people. Its a song about being in love people. its simple and sweet. |

My interpretation of the song is this essentially, He likes this girl. But the girl haas a reputation as being a man-eater "cannibal" and even though he likes her, he's also scared that this could be a REALLY bad thing. Later he decides "screw it" and tries anyway even if he is going to get hurt "take a bite of my heart tonight" Ultimately, it doesnt work and they fight and he tries to point out that no one else is really at fault "It's us that made this mess Why can't you understand?" and they part "say good bye to my heart tonight" |
