The whole album is themed about a war made by stupid leaders and how one city takes posetion of another. Knights of Cydonia is about the end of the disc and takes part when people of the captured city are fighting for their lives and for freedom. I think all Muse's albums since 'absolution' have a theme. |

...That being clarified, Im going to give the explanation that relates to my life. Some time ago I drank to much in a party and in a 'dissatisfaction' episode I got us bounced. I got angry at my girl(who has been living with me 4 years) and became depressed. Im not a "drunk dialing" guy but that day I texted a good friend (who is to much of a drunk dialer and has called me several times in that condition), in the messages I expressed deep sorrow. He tried to cheer me up. weeks ago my friend and I were drinking in my house and as he got really wasted he brought that day back and suggested Im unhappy. He left and I was alone listening at this song, I started thinking about my actual life and how people use to take advantage of me (friends, family, girl, etc); and its not their fault, its just the way I am, cause I like people around me to be allright. Im aware of this since long ago. Well this leads to my interpretation: Hello again, friend of a friend, I knew you when Our common goal was waiting for the world to end **They knew when we were dedicated to do nothing, they felt alienated from most of the others like a lot of young people. They were black sheep. Got balls of steel, got an automobile, for a minimum wage Got real estate, I'm buying it all up in outerspace **Always wondered who was the one that got all that. Now I think its just as time passes they advanced socially, they got jobs, cars and houses, they got caught in the trap and they buy everything its supposed to, for someone in their position. Now that the truth is just a rule that you can bend You crack the whip, shape-shift and trick the past again **They now forget how the things were, sometimes they convince themselves they were always like today and make excuses for their past. It makes them forget their black sheep status and actually feel part of something(society, family) I'll send you my love on a wire Lift you up, everytime, everyone, ooo, pulls away, oo **Sometimes they cant stand their way of living and they break down. They feel different from all the people surrounding them and consider themselves black sheep (emphasis on 'everyone' not just some people - kind of ostracism). One black sheep friend encourage the other. Mechanical bull, the number one You'll take a ride from anyone, everyone wants a ride, pulls away, oooh from you **People recognize them as successful society members and now want to be friends, and even ask them for favors, they acquire obligations with society people and with family and friends. Most people just come and go. |

Hi, I took this from Songfacts.com: -Haines explained to Spinner how the song's obscure lyrical content prevented it making Metric's 2009 album, Fantasies. "'Black Sheep' was always an unusual number. It went through various road tests and revisions throughout the making of our album Fantasies. It was a real banger live, but it didn't make the cut, mostly because no one, including me, could get a handle on what the hell the song was about. I wrote the lyrics all at once in this full-on stream-of-consciousness moment and I couldn't explain where all the imagery was coming from. It was plucked from the unknown. 'Now that the truth is just a rule that you can bend/You crack the whip, shape-shift and trick the past again.' Come again? To make matters worse, I insisted that the song begin with a creepy chanting intro. I had the whole band in the vocal booth whispering the words 'black sheep come home' without knowing why."- This points to the song being about anything, from two emo friends to an ex-girlfriend turn to a whore. Knowing that Haines herself wrote the song it cant relate much to a poor/hipster/weird person talking to a succesful person, if that's the meaning of the song, maybe Emily wrote it as a complaint to herself. After reading all posts I agree with most of them, there are several interpretations based on personal experiences and since I really like this song I have to give mine. Mine is not based in a guy who has gone against his principles, just the natural interaction of individuals with society over time. Anyway who would love a shape shifter who lies. read next post... |

Of course there are no intimacy, the guy just loves and respects that woman so much that he would die for a night with her, or defend her with his machete at the cost of his life. He just want to receive "La petite mort" from her at least one time. |
