| Fever Ray – Dry and Dusty Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Karin doesn't write transparent, vapid lyrics. Her songwriting seems intended to confuse and confront as much as describe. This song fits the bill, and with such a wonderfully reflective mood. This song seems to be, on it's surface, about two lovers who've faced hard times. The voice represents one of those lovers and seems to be addressed to the other, describing the longing the one has for the other and feelings of pride he or she has for their history together, despite the hardship. My favorite line from the song, "Work as I've been told // In return I get money // Soft feet in the hall // And I long for every moment" can be applied to this interpretation, as well, as it could represent the nature of the hardship the couple has endured to survive along with the longing for a life without that "work." At the same time, I feel this song is meant to be a call to society to slow down it's current momentum, and change it's trajectory. How many of us, after all, long to be with our families, listening to "soft feet in the hall" rather than doing what we're told to get money? Indeed, as we truly are "capsules of energy", why are we subjecting ourselves to lives which leave us "dry and dusty"? I prefer this more subversive interpretation, personally, since it fits with Karin's known confrontational, sociological, and thought-provoking artistic style. (the whole album is b*d*ss, btw.) |
