ive never seen the dark side of the oz, although ive heard about it and the beginning of this song is definitely referencing that. i think this song is about sort of coming out of a trance and its like youre clicking through tv and you see the dark side of the oz and you click to MTV and people sing about everything being ok in the end. i just imagine the person in bed all the time in a dark room wasting his life away doing nothing and always wanting to change (new years resolutions) and "by this time next year i wont be here" (he doesnt want to be like this, he wants to change his life). and suddenly he realizes what hes been doing and the music gets louder and faster almost as if hes starting to awaken and become alive again. "to tell you the truth i've said it before tomorrow i start in a new direction i know i've been half-asleep i'm never doing that again" (again with almost coming out of a sort of trance) "voices calling from a yellow road to come downstairs and say hello don't be shy just say hello" the dark side of the oz is referenced again. its almost as if hes using it to gain courage to change his life and "come downstairs and say hello" lastly, "i look straight at what's coming ahead and soon it's going to change in a new direction every night as i'm falling asleep these words repeated in my head" this is sort of like him acknowledging that his life is going to change and thats ok..and every night he thinks about not going back into his dead life and awakening thats just what i think. everyone has their own opinion. |
