I think this song is about a guy, who loves this girl, who he is addressing in the song, and he's saying let's go back in time, to your best friend's house, to that party, where I messed up. I got too high, I made out with some girl Marmalade that I don't like like I love you. And him being tongue tied is a double entendre- he's tongue tied as in the literal sense, busy making out with that girl and caught in the act, but also tongue tied as in he doesn't know what to say to explain himself to her, the girl he loved then, the girl he still loves now, even after a meaningless makeout. I'm pulling some of this meaning from the music video, which plays backwards like Coldplay's 'The Scientist'. You see him eat a brownie as the last shot, and working backwards (as in forward, if that makes sense), he makes out with some girl, the girl's part comes in and she looks annoyed as she sings, he looks distressed as he washes his face in the bathroom to 'sober up' and while he sings 'I love you now' you can hear the desperation in his voice, and then he runs away from the party escaping 3 masked men that watch him and chase him. Maybe symbolic of his regret. Keep in mind the album title is Never Trust A Happy Song. That's my two cents. |

I agree mainly with people who have described the song as a relationship between a man and woman that became rocky because the man is not sure of what he wants. Looking for happiness, for something. And getting cold feet about being with the woman. Then the woman gets fed up with his selfishness and unwillingness and they end. Then the man takes so time and realizes she was good for him, and wants her again. She is willing to give it another try, to help him find that happiness with her, together. The difference though in my interpretation is that I'm not sure if the ending is that their love doesn't last. The music is much too happy, and sweet. His voice is soothing, like he's content. He sings her part too about the mess, and I feel that they are musing on what it took to get to that part in the relationship. His selfishness, her desires for him to be there, and they realize how human they are, every fear and shortcoming they have, but it's led them to something good, they "can do much more together". He seems to be apologizing in the beginning of the last part, and realizes how invested she was in the relationship from the beginning. The part about "I want nothing more than pleasure" could mean that he just wants to be happy, and since he's happy with her, there's nothing else he needs to search for. The part of making "such a mess" could almost be taken as an amusement in retrospect of how messy human emotions and relationships are. Maybe I'm being too optimistic ha. |
