When DM were doing promotion for their album Spirit, Martin said in one interview that most of Ultra is about death. I already knew that Home is about death (“Death”s door, an earlier b-side even had the home analogy as an metaphor for death). And I already knew that Barrel of a gun was about Dave’s addiction. Now if he says most of the songs are about death on this album, it kinda makes sense that The Love Thieves is also about Dave and his “love”. Love will be the death of my lonely soul brothers. His soul brother, Dave. It also addresses the vicious side of being a famous musician. It even mentions a “trail”. Dave actually went to court in 1996 (around the time they were after his NDO, because of the drug charges. But then, on this song Martin also blames fame and stardom for having been so close to death. 1996 was when most of the album was recorded, but Dave was so wasted they only recorded vocals for 2 songs before he od’ed and was sent to court and rehab. Martin said they were recording and, but couldn’t gat anymore vocals done for a while because Dave had to go to rehab to end his case. Now usually Martin already comes with all songs already demoed when they start recording. Maybe this was an exception and was written when stuck in LA or this song was abut something else and he changed the lyrics to fit his soul brother’s struggle. And also, never forget Martin himself didn’t get sober until some 10 years later. So it could be about himself and alcohol. He had already written about his drinkig a few times (AQOL and NLMDA just to name a few). |

This song is about having a moment of individuality in a relationship. She wakes up in the morning and sneaks out of the house where she lives with her partner and has this little moment of nonsensical insight. then she goes back in to her partner and carries on feeling safe again with her lover. It's very beautiful. and it's really something to consider when you go into a relationship: do you want to blend with your partner 24/7 or do you want to still keep a few moments for yourself alone? |
