About "Mr.Mastodon" I have a feeling he chose this to describe a person, who, if we take this literally will mean he's herding or tending after something that's extinct. In a metaphorical sense, I would guess it means a person who saves meanings from moments or things that aren't there anymore. Cuts swatches out of all material. |

I relate to this song quite a lot because I'm a Mr.Mastodon Farm myself, I cut swatches out of all material. Which is to say: I observe the world around me, and my human self-absorbedness makes me feel as if everything on the outside is a metaphor for the inside, or what's going on in my life. I've had literal moments of having to watch where something goes, to take it as a sign, "it's as if my life will fall unless I see their ascent" .. I think it's almost satirical (although John's voice makes everything sound satiric haha, and I love that) and it points out how humans like to put meaning and coherence in a universe that's random. |

just saw your comment, and i think it's the one that's most alike with my own musings about the song. :) i must say also that i HAVE always wondered if john followed any religion or is an atheist / existentialist merely because of his lyrics. |

i think it's about being there for someone for THEM, and not to feel needed. helping out, not to make the person want to be held in your arms, but for them to thoroughly feel/be better :) |
