Kansas – Carry on Wayward Son Lyrics 9 years ago
from wiki, authors own words
"
This was written by Kansas guitarist Kerry Livgren. According to Livgren, the song was not written to express anything specifically religious, though it certainly expresses spiritual searching and other ideas.

Livgren became an evangelical Christian in 1980, and has said that his songwriting to that point was all about "searching." Regarding this song, he explained: "I felt a profound urge to 'Carry On' and continue the search. I saw myself as the 'Wayward Son,' alienated from the ultimate reality, and yet striving to know it or him. The positive note at the end ('Surely heaven waits for you') seemed strange and premature, but I felt impelled to include it in the lyrics. It proved to be prophetic.

How about the authors own thoughts...which no one has bothered to list...from wiki.

Avenged Sevenfold – Hail to the King Lyrics 10 years ago
M. Shadows explained to Kerrang! magazine:
The song tells the tale of a tyrannical king who strikes down any who oppose him. "'Hail To The King' is a question about how society sees itself. From day one, people have elected kings and leaders, people have followed presidents, and they cry over who the new pope is. Sometimes you've got to step back and say, 'What are we doing here? Why do we need all of these people to tell us how to run our lives?' That goes for God above and Satan below. Who's the king? We have many kings. It was one of those things when we said the statement, sang it in a song and it was like, 'wow, that really strikes a nerve and means something.' We knew that some people would look at it as us saying, 'We're the kings,' but we were willing to undergo that amount of criticism, when really it was something a bit deeper about society."

Slipknot – Dead Memories Lyrics 13 years ago
I labeled this as my interpretation as I am not a band member...it's pretty obvious what this song is about. The song is about the disillusionment and sadness that comes about when a former christian (note the christ allusions in the vid) learns of all the truth about these man made religions and gods, that they were NEVER real...and the soul is just another made up concept. This song is about the pain one goes through dealing with a life wasted living according to the idea that a god is there for you, to help you, to guide you, to judge you. It expresses the sadness one feels at the wasted effort put into "doing good" when all you really did was NOT enjoy life for the sake of some preacher.

This is not a song about breaking up with your woman...it is much deeper and more profound, you can get another woman...you cannot replace a non-existent god or afterlife that you have been hoping for to make up for this meaningless life. Even the christian and jewish bible says life is meaningless...King Solomon said it himself. Funny isn't it?

It may be that only someone who has once worshiped a god (christian god myself) and dedicated themselves to a life of sacrifice so that in heaven there would be a reward (no weed, no alcohol, no sex...etc etc)...something to make up for all the shit in this world...but there isn't...the reality shattering realization that there is no god to pray to, no greater being that understand your pain and frustration...there is nothing in death...and you are alone. All you were taught by any church was a lie.

I don't expect someone who was not raised to be of one of the mainstream religions and then discovered the truth to understand this fully. Those who were sucked into the world of the religious by no fault of their own, either early in life (such as myself) or later in life can fully comprehend this song. If you haven't...be thankful...it's a pretty damning experience, often psychologically traumatic. I speak from first hand exp. and I think this song backs me up...as does "wherein lies continue"
