I'd assume it means a scarlet letter. It's a blaze (of red). If we're going with the cheating ex theory... |

Note: After seeing someone I loved wither away and die of cancer this year, this song strikes a raw nerve. For me, this song 100% describes every moment of the experience, right to the end when I said it was okay let go and not be afraid. Haven't been able to listen to the song since. My "colours have changed, too". Just can't let go. |

I like TFT's and Jules', though I feel Jules' cover is an entirely different song. Sure, the lyrics are the same, but it just... isn't the same song. TFT captured the disconnected/dissociated alienation by clashing the downbeat lyrics with an upbeat tempo. Actually, the more upbeat tempo just adds to the depressed sense, since the world does march on without us. People don't care. We live, we suffer, we're happy, we die; it has no impact on the world as a whole. It's a depressing thing to consider, especially as a teen. Jules' version just emphasizes the sadness - not to say it's a bad thing, but it's more straightforward to understand. TFT wrote it in a more complex way. (For the record, I liked Donnie Darko for the portrayal of 1980s psychiatric care - as someone in the field, it's an interesting and somewhat scary story. And not uncommon in delusional clients... being "emo" definitely isn't something to strive for.) |

I like Lostmycapo's interpretation. There's a lot of people out there who are empty, in emotional pain from things that happened in the past, but can't express it. "What's left of me or anyone when we've denied the hurting?" Even if it's difficult or not acceptable to express the pain you feel, what IS left of yourself ? The fake part that keeps a straight face, that never says a thing unkind? We can't really be ourselves until we acknowledge everything about ourselves. As a wise person once told me, "you're only as sick as the secrets you keep". It applies to this song quite well. And, like others say on this site, this song describes my own life well. I'm one of those people that no one speaks to, and, in the rare case they might, never expresses anger or says if something is wrong. Everything is a-okay. Sometimes I even convince myself. "Emo", I realize, but the truth. It's a common way to cope with unresolved issues. |

This is a beautiful song, I can't believe no one has commented on it! Out of the entire album, this one stuck out the most. The imagery is fantastic. It's obviously about a relationship that's slowly degenerated -"like an ember all but out". She (or they both) were oblivious or in denial about the relationship being over - "this dark spell you're under has you dumbstruck" and "if he had one eye on the exit, oh, you'd never known until he drove off". The house is a painful place for her to be now, alone - "this home that you both made looks haunted from the yard". The most interesting part that drew me to this song was the chorus. "You can hear those distant bells, it's like your church is crying out" and "you know they'll never leave" refers to marriage - vows and commitment are supposed to be for a lifetime. "Like a wolf cries to her young" - if a mother wolf is separated from her young, she howls and cries so they will return to her, where they belong. Just like the wolf's cries, the literal or metaphorical "church bells" (commitment/vows) also call out for him to return home, where he belongs. |

I was looking for high quality audio for this song on YouTube and saw Josh Groban covered it. I like this version better, but maybe I'm biased since I heard the original first. I agree a lot with "telepathy1994", though I think it can apply to a relationship with anyone, romantic, friendship, or otherwise. Even a pet, as mentioned before. Life is often referred to as seasons: spring = childhood, summer = youth/adulthood, fall = middle age, and winter = old age. "When you change colors, I change mine too"/"You'll go through changes, and I'll go through them too" seems to be noting how we age alongside everyone else. Sadly, we have no control over the seasons and death is an inevitable, uncontrollable part of life. (I'm not sure about the interpretation of suicide after losing someone, since we all die eventually, but it could also fit.) If anyone has ever spoken to family about death, especially in the midst of serious or terminal illness), the conversation can parallel these lyrics. Both sides need comfort, both are afraid to face the upcoming changes. Both want the other to be able to "let go", especially if one is sick and "just can't hang on". Couple of things I noticed: "I knew you when you were green and strong. You were like a feather on a wing, so long." (Green and strong = Spring, youth. "So long" is another way to say "goodbye" - so could this be "goodbye" to Spring/youth or to life itself? or just referring a young life, full of potential?) "I've known you all Summer, and you rose above it all. I see you hesitate to Fall now." (you've seen the person strong and vibrant during adulthood/Summer, but resistant or hesitant for life transitioning into Fall/middle-age?) "The cold wind is pushing hard on you." (perhaps an illness or injury is pushing seasons/life to pass more quickly than expected) Absolutely beautiful song, I don't know why more people haven't heard it. I recently found this band through another YouTube connection and all their songs are fantastic. |
