Ok, I am feeling like I may be seriously disturbed. In my mind, this song is about how sometimes we are drawn on "magnetized" to people who are bad for us. I picture that her love interest in this song is a serial killer who has drawn her into the woods. Slain her with his zirconium smile. Killed her and cast her into a shallow grave which is why she is "waiting for shovels to cast" her. The furnace that "burns everlasting" is getting rid of the body and is putting "black tatoos" all over her (i.e. burn marks). When she gets to the homing pigeon, I think she has transformed into a new state (maybe reincarnation) but she is still drawn. That's what I've always thought. |

Not to be maudlin, but "a good man has been hung, because of my loose tongue" likely refers to the suicide of Paul Hester, Crowded House's original drummer who hung himself shortly before the band was to reunite for the first time. |

There is a live version of this song where Neil introduces the song by saying it's about the morning after a big night out when you wake up and see static on the television. He acknowledges that in America it's more likely that you'd wake up to an exerciser infomercial. He says, "People say my songs are dark, but when you wake up with some girl shaking her butt in your face, THAT'S dark!" I love it.
To the best of my knowledge, Neil has not battled addition to anything. I've always thought this song my be about his strained relationship with the band/fame. I think he sees fame as a loss of freedom and control. So, anyway, that's what this song means to me. |
