I cannot begin to interpret any meanings of this song that SM wanted to impart, but somehow it sums up precisely my existence at this particular moment. |

Let's roll with that (no pun intended), he is asking for love, to be held down, and for the knife above him, the loss of control of which you speak is precisely what he desires, what he needs sexually... |

my current anthem..a lovely gem that can be interpreted and molded into whatever one who listens may need at that particular time: as a true work of art should be.
I ascribed a completely different meaning to this song ten years ago. The Beauty of Ambiguity... |

wow...I love pavement precisely because their song meanings are both unreadable, yet open to any interpretation argued successively...some brilliant thoughts there people...
(I'm going with the pychosexual literal reading with this one....he just wants to slap her, the lack of lustre is simply the excuse for the innate desire, or perhaps the slap is necessary for the lustre, the pain inflicted is necessary for the beauty...but hey, I'm just having fun pretending I have any clue of what SM actually meant, if anything) |

oh my how i love thee, malkmus...
I believe this song's general pessisism could be read as a reflection of the philosophy of Schopenhauer, who based his lovely and quite life-negative works on the teachings of the Indian "vedics" ("I was cursed by the Vedic") Cursed with knowledge, therefore cursed with misery?
I don't know...I just enjoy throwing ideas around. |

Lordy, lordy I love this song....interpreting meaning for this one seems somewhat meaningless....so very open to subjective interpretation it's as if the song is a gift packaged individually for each one of us to with what we wish. |

| Pavement – Harness Your Hopes Lyrics

Another girl's perspective; in this song SM is addressing the cultural and personal aspects of deviancy. The lyrics are laden with what can be read as overtures to BDSM, "the harness on the hopes, the lovers on the ropes", and warnings that playing with sexual power in that way takes trust, "harness your hopes, on just one person," to have it be "ecstatic"...and deviancy is amongst us as "freaks have stormed the white house." I saw this tour in the late 90's and could sing along to every word, loving every moment of it, while having absolutely no clue what BDSM even stood for. I'm fairly convinced our non-sequitur geeky intellectual SM is quite the kinkster. Why not, when born with those initials? Love it.... |
