I believe this song is about changes in life. And that's being compared to an earthquake "sleep with the lights on, shuttered with shades drawn, there's too many windows" that verse is very tricky... I imagine a big empty house with a lot of windows. A couple's first home. But really, that whole thing is also a metaphor for-as clishe as this sounds- a house of love..or better...a house within love. This nervous house has all of the ups and downs and comforts of love. |

I think that this song is mainly about the relationship between father and son. They're on a road trip through upstate new york and it's cold. He's a little boy and his fathers keeping him warm. They have a portable television that they keep with them. And this boy is now a man reflecting on his life. His father is dead now but he remembers him fondly. "I saw it in the soil just recently Where the rows of teeth they grow in fields of infinite greed And here laid the father, and here stood the son Where the road meets the horizon for everyone" |

The song is about 2 people recognizing themselves within each other and their differences. And for once in life everything is simple..."we are the same. we are both saved" And I agree with the last comment. As for the "lying in a field of glass, underneath the overpass" somehow I find this to be metaphoric. But very vivid...you could imagine so many different scenarios here. |
