| ya its definitely about the Heaven's Gate Cult that commited mass suicide in 1997, believing that their souls would leave earth and board a space ship that was trailing the Hale-Bopp comet. | |
| Mumford & Sons – Little Lion Man Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Alexander Hamilton was nicknamed, among "Father of the Constitution", "Little Lion of the Revolution". Hamilton also was scarred by the scandal of a past affair in 1795. perhaps Mumford is relating to Hamilton who's character and story fits much of this song. "you'll never settle any of your score" could be reference to Hamilton's decades long political and social battle with Aaron Burr, which ended in a gun duel where Burr killed Hamilton. | |

| Vampire Weekend – Giving Up the Gun Lyrics | 14 years ago |

i like the interpretation that relates this song between the history of japan and the life an individual. i took from that and ran with it a little, here's what i got. "Your sword's grown old and rusty, burnt beneath the rising sun It's locked up like a trophy, forgetting all the things it's done" -japan has come a long way since its samurai days, and those old ways are now far off from the modern mainstream culture; an individual ages and their glory days are now far from their current lifestyle "And though it's been a long time, you're right back where you started from I see it in your eyes that now you’re giving up the gun" -what many others said, going back to old ways, or at least celebrating them "When I was 17, I had wrists like steel and I felt complete" -the individual remembers being a teenager filled with angst, spending many, as someone put it, lonely nights, but being satisfied with it. japan was an isolated land for very long, and they liked it that way. "And now my body fades behind a brass charade and I'm obsolete" - the individual misses being young. japanese imperialism lead to its being bombed in 1945. Imperialism put japan in a bit of a rut politically and socially.it feels obsolete behind its brass charade(its image of technological superiority hides the fact that there are many social issues in Japan today. "But if the chance remains to see those better days, I'd cut the cannons down My ears are blown to bits from all the rifle hits, but still I crave that sound" -individual wants to relive those days, teenage lifestyle wasn't very good for their health, but they would still like to live it again. japan would give up modernization to return to the old ways, but still craves the possible glories of imperialism, even though it was really bad for them. "I heard you play guitar down at a seedy bar where skinheads used to fight Your Tokugawa smile and your garbage style used to save the night" -the individual used to be really cool, playing guitar at old run-down looking bars, wearing thrift store clothes. skinheads are a subculture that often disagrees within their own circles on political and social subjects, much like how japan had era's of extreme civil war (sengoku jidai) the shogun (tokugawa smile) often restored peace. "You felt the coming wave, told me we'd all be brave, you said you wouldn't flinch But in the years that passed since I saw you last, you haven't moved an inch" -japan held its ground against foreign expansion, but now hasn't been able to progress because of it. |

| The Vaccines – A Lack Of Understanding Lyrics | 14 years ago |

i think its a song about an event where he saw his father for the first time in a year, and they haven't been talking either (should i shake your hand or should i give you a kiss), since there are other songs where where he reveals that his relationship with his father isn't great i think it's his father who tells him he has too much time on his hands; meaning his thinks he hasn't done enough with his life to where he'd be busy; he doesn't approve of his life choices (if i can't convince you then nobody can i guess) |

| The Vaccines – Wetsuit Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
i honestly thought this was about conforming to the culture around you whether you like it or not, i thought putting on a wetsuit was a metaphor for making yourself up to have an outward appearance that is on par with what the culture says you should be like to be cool or whatever haha sometimes i romanticize things too much |

this is from their official website, the main difference is "show we 'low quotations" Break me on the thirty-seventh hour Tout me, doubt me, show me all of your power I will watch you rise on my back from the ground Friend or foe? I don't know Do you like what you've found? I will one day shine with you I'll shine on a faithful few Show we 'low quotations Have you earned your stripes? Fabricate salvation Lord, I know your type I've known you all my life I was always wrong, you all in white Brush my cause aside with little trouble Oh my god, I think I'm hearing double I will watch you rise on my back from afar Friend or foe? I don't know now you're up in the stars But I will one day shine with you I'll shine on a faithful few Show we 'low quotations Have you earned your stripes? Fabricate salvation Lord, I know your type I've known you all my life I was always wrong, you all in white Show we 'low quotations Have you earned your stripes? Fabricate salvation Lord, i know your type I've known you all my life I was always wrong, you all in white Show we 'low quotations Have you earned your stripes? Fabricate salvation Lord, I know your type I've known you all my life I was always wrong, you all in white |

| Death Cab for Cutie – Portable Television Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
this is from the official digital booklet Portable television shrouded in snow In a raggedy van on the side of the road The night it had frozen through my little bones So you took me in your arms You squeezed out the cold Upstate New York Autumn brightly colored leaves The hills were on fire They burned for you and me And where we were going it was built like a lie But as sacred as the Bible So we didn’t question “why” They sodded the soil just recently Where the rows of teeth they grow in fields of infinite green And here laid the father And here stood the son Where the road meets the horizon for everyone Portable television take us away From this burden of reflection we’ve carried today Oh the generator’s running but there’s nothing on the air But the static is a comfort so we huddled round and stared i think this song is about his views on religion, god, and death all this of course is just my personal interpretation i see the raggedy van on the side of the road as a metaphor for how he and his family were on a journey in life then the night had frozen which means tough times came along and took a little hope out of their life (stopped the van) then they looked to god and they felt hope (squeezed out the cold) the second stanza i don't fully understand its obviously a personal experience the second verse is about a funeral where a son buries a father and Ben is talking about how death is the absolute end because the horizon is the end, there's nothing past it (Where the road meets the horizon for everyone) the horizon is always something you are looking out towards and never actually reach, as is the knowledge of what happens after death; you don't find out until you're actually there. in the last verse i think he is saying that many people just use religion and god to comfort themselves from the hardships of life and death whether or not they truly believe in it(Portable television take us away...there’s nothing on the air But the static is a comfort so we huddled round and stared) i don't actually agree with much of this but i thought it an interesting opinion and i thought i should share the official lyrics as well as my interpretation |
