Lies and betrayals Fruit-covered nails Electricity and lust Won't break the door Lies and betrayals, (sweet covered back stabbing) electricity or even lust wont change this. Things are listed here that won't change how he feels. I've got a heavy coat It's filled with rocks and sand Others touched on this nicely. I'd agree it represents depression, or being 'weighed down'. next he says what he wants, and what he thinks will help. In the chorus he talks about what he will do if he comes out of it. To me 'A system for two' sounds like an offer for a relationship. Ex-magician That still knows the tricks Tricks are everything to me Until it's free he holds this person in high regard because he is mystified by their 'tricks', and that mystery is important to him. He realizes that once that's gone, though, his interest will fade. maybe that makes him sad? He could also be referring to himself and his own tricks here, it's kind of up to your interpretation. I've got a trigger cut And I can't pull it back The wording here is a little confusing at first, but i see it as saying, "What's done is done. there's no going back for me." this leads nicely into the next part... But if I learn how... etc. this sounds like wishful thinking to me. He knows he's doomed maybe, but he's still going to speak like there's a chance. Then the chorus changes with this: You will look at me and say (I've got a system for two) That you just wish I went away Her idea of a 'system for two' is him going away. Poor guy. I learned the truth The truth of the words Truth I made for you because It's just as good Have you ever lied to someone you liked to gain a common ground with them? Not like a whole lie, where you state the opposite of what you believe, but saying you really like Star Wars because they love Star Wars. Really though, you're pretty indifferent about it. But that little 'lie' gives you common ground. I only say lie because it contrasts 'truth in this verse. The 'truth I made for you' is that lie, or really, that half-truth. To him that should be just as good to her. That's kind of another flaw he has, he's not 'true to himself'. Corny, I know, but that's how he feels, inadequate, and weighed down. It's depressing not being able to connect with someone you want to connect with, and then more so to be rejected by them. And if I spit it out Before I chew the ring I'll rearrange it till it Looks just right today First line: If he changes this Half-truth behavior, this trickery(?). When he changes who he is, to who he needs to be, or who he thinks he needs to be... Second line: Chew the ring = call off the idea of marriage/relationship. If he can stop himself and fix this before he gives up on his hopes altogether, then... Third/Fourth line: He'll work on himself and rearrange what needs to be rearranged until it looks just right. This is one of my favorite songs. It's very poetic to me, and manages to say very much with very few words. |

I love this song, and Pavement for that matter, for how many interpretations can be had from each lyric. I agree with a lot of what is being said here, but these are just a few thoughts I had while driving the other day: "She's the only one, who always inhales Paris is stale and it's war if we fail" makes me think of an edgy girl, taking risks and seeking 'adventure'. It has bored her though, Paris is old. Something great and mesmerizing (a little like love?) is stale. "It's war if we fail" makes me think of several things, but mostly: this woman that has seen the world or life or whatever is like a big deal in her mind. Someone with money, or esteem. What she does matters. It's a great contrast to the other verses talking about a pretty bleak life of trivial worries in a small town. As for the whole 'moving forward' thing, I think this verse kind of criticizes this person, and makes her something he decides he doesn't want to be. As we move through life, we really get an idea of what we want to be from our experiences and how we push ahead each day, moving forward. |

I can definitely see the break up angle in this one. He feels that the only truths they shared were common-knowledge type stuff, and he knew it couldn't work out. You were wrong when you said everything gonna be alright. the lyrics pulled for the verses make me think that the only advice she ever gave, the only things she thought, said, or did, not only weren't her own, but were useless to him. |

I think that several songs on Perfect From Now On interconnect; this one, in my opinion, is with I Would Hurt A Fly. IWHAF is about an annoying problem he sees with the world that's like a fly, going unnoticed by, he feels, everyone. I believe this is either that annoying problem, or, perhaps, just a more specific one that he sees independent of I Would Hurt A Fly. Now let me explain my own interpretation of the song. 1st verse: He's saying there's no novelty in his life anymore, specifically in an intellectual sense. No one has any new thoughts and so things have become dry. 2nd verse: "that stupid sound" is what made me think of IWHAF. Here he's saying that he hates this dryness that he sees in everyone. It makes him sick but others don't seem to be bothered, and he feels they never will. 3rd verse: He feels uncomfortable in his own skin. its hard for him to believe this has happened to him. 4th verse: he feels people are self centered and uninterested, even in things there's no way they could know about, (dreams are always novel because we experience them individually). I think there's some truth to the literal meaning of the verse, but on a deeper level I think he's saying that lies have become the only way to entertain those people. they are only interested in fantastical things they might be a part of, dreams or otherwise. 5th verse: IMO this is him saying again that nobody notices this blandness in themselves, or the fact that it really has been pushing him away. It has made him crazy and perhaps changed who he is. |

| Built to Spill – Kicked It in the Sun Lyrics | 14 years ago |

I think this song is trying to describe, not one person in particular, but a kind of person . I had trouble linking the three distinct parts together, but, in my opinion, it's about the people we know that waste any potential they have for a good life. sooner or later we will all realize that we might not end up anywhere near where we want to be in life, but it's up to us, from that realization on, to decide what to do with it. let it go to waste, or make do, reassuring ourselves with the uflattering reality that, well, at least our mothers still appreciate us. I interpret "kicked it in the sun" to mean 'Kicked it (his life) [into] the sun' and widdled his life down to even less than what it is described as in the beginning. When the writer asks, "How could you refuse?" it's a sarcastic way of saying, "poor you, but how could you NOT have turned out a wreck?" And finally "by the time you read this" means 'By the time you realized that your life was stale and you'd only find the same things over and over from now on. |
