Within Temptation – Lost Lyrics 13 years ago
I think that this song is about a relationship. It is about the man in the relationship and his thoughts in regard to the girl that he has lost. It seems like he is trying to hold onto the relationship, even though everyone else is disagrees with him:

"I tried to revive what's already drowned, they think i'm a fool who can't realize.
Hope plays a wicked game with the mind 'cause I thought that love would bind.
I cannot revive what's already drowned; she won't come around"

I other words, he has hope that he can revive what remains of their love and rebuild upon it, but he is doing it against all the odds. I would say that's what this entire song circulates around.

Regina Spektor – Man of a Thousand Faces Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is about a very poor and lonely man. He steals pages from texts at the library. He brings them home, and when he begins reading them he begins his "ascension." He gets into the fiction of his readings so he forgets about religion, or justices. This could be a reference to John Campbell writing about, "The Man with A Thousand Faces." Campbell's writes about the attributes of an epic hero in this text, and it sounds like the character in this song is deeply involved in this reading. He is so involved in what he reads that he doesn't care about being a perfectionist. First the moon is his friend, he sees her every night. But when he gets home, he sits by the moonlit window, and begins reading, and the moon is no longer his friend because he is so deep into his readings. Then, when he eats (his lump of sugar; which explains how poor he is) he is taken away from the reading and grateful for the familiarity of the moon, so he smiles, "at her like he knows her."

All in all it sounds like a poor, soft spoken lonely man, who is upset with his life. He never succeeded in doing what he wanted to do, so now he just goes home and reads to take his mind away from the life he lives.

Regina Spektor – Blue Lips Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is excellently written. However, I think it has a depressing message. If I may put in my 2-cents, I believe this song is about a man who has a realization of what the world is really like. Blue, the most human color, is also considered when you think of somebody as being sad. If blue is the most human color, and associated with sadness, then the correlation is that humans are sad. A man found faith, but then asked God, "This is all there is?" Then when he thought about it, everything began to collide on a backdrop of blue. He began walking, living his life, he grew up from being a blissful child to understanding that things only get worse as you get older. This particular verse guides us through mankind's downfalls throughout history:

They started out beneath the knowledge tree.
Then they chopped it down to make white picket fences,
And, marching along the railroad tracks,
They smile real wide for the camera lenses.
They made it past the enemy lines
Just to become enslaved in the assembly lines

The realization that each day when we wake up, and consistently throughout history, man has not made progress. When we do, we destroy it for ourselves. Blue is the color of our planet, and our planet, as well as man, is sad. Until we start to make progress in the right direction, (understanding morals, helping one another, working together), we will always remain a blue planet. Nothing can change this, not even the will of God. (stumbled in to faith and thought, began walking then took a break because he saw the world for what it really is, when he finally began to walk again he witnessed that nobody can associate with him, they only carry on in their own lives. Then he had an epiphany...the picture in his mind awoke...and he plays out history, the knowledge tree etc. and realizes there is no hope for man.

Reminds me of Carl Sagan's pale blue dot.

Let me know what you think.
