I agree the lyrics here don't match some of the versions of the song, but these lyrics do match the original 12" mix. New Order re-recorded this song multiple times. There is a 1998 version, a 1987 version (which is the one on the Trainspotting soundtrack), and the original 12" version which is totally a different recording (music, vocals, and lyrics) from the original 7" version. They're all actually quite good; the original 12" is kind of aggressive in its style, the original 7" version even more percussive, the 1987 version is just about perfect in mix, and the 1998 version feels like it was recorded about ten minutes ago because it just sounds so fresh. As far as the song itself, yeah...best New Order song in their catalog (and that is an impressive thing). Goatanji's interpretation below is exactly how I hear the song, but then again I'm a 40 year old man who has spent a lot of very little time with a very lot of people; it's a familiar feeling. Oh, and the line "and though it hurts me to see you this way, betrayed by words I've never heard, too hard to say" clearly is referring to the phrase "I love you." |
