Although I've never heard of "The Lady of Shallot" until I read it on here, I'm pretty sure the singers were thinking about it some as the wrote the song.
(I just watched the video, and at the very end, there's a book laying open to the poem, "The Lady of Shallot.") |

Although there's nothing in the song that specifically points to long-term depression (everyone feels lonely or unwanted sometimes), that's what I get from it. As in, the girl becomes depressed, and it changes her. She's not the same person that she used to be, and thus starts to feel like she doesn't belong anywhere. She's lonely, and everything seems hopeless. After being like that for so long, she's feels like she's "falling behind" and doesn't know how to feel better or get back on track. The "nobody's home" line could refer to her feeling like she has no one to go to for comfort or help. |

I feel like it's about someone close to her--her mother, perhaps, as others have suggested--who has a lot of problems that end up hurting her. For example, say the mother was abused as a child and never got the support/help that she needed. Throughout her life it still affects her, and she endures other hardships as time wears as. Because of her problems, she inadvertently isn't a very strong parent, and the child suffers from both watching the mother's state and also from receiving neglect.
At least, that's one possibility. |
