If we had reasonably happy to happy childhoods and lived in a certain place during that time, we associate happiness, warmth, and security to that place. As we grow up though we will probably have to leave that place and our lives of happiness will be replaced by a certain amount of struggle, misery, and pain. " Where do we go? " indeed. Where exactly is it that we are suppose to move in order to have that warmth back in our lives again? You will spend the rest of your life trying to get that happiness back and you may or may not find it. |

When I hear this song it reminds me of the place where I grew up. It was a hobby farm with an older medium-sized house surrounded by a good bit of land. We had pecan trees, pear trees, a small vineyard and rows of crops growing all around the house. My dad didn't relate to hippies but with his love of nature and farming and the rural outdoors, he was closer to thinking like one than he realized. To me that place was like the perfect hippie compound. I think at the time a lot of people not just young ones, were sick of fighting a war that we couldn't seem to win no matter how many bombs we dropped. I think this song also resonated with people who were tired of dirty air in the cities, and who wanted to get back to the way they grew up, on a farm ( the garden ). This song I think represents a great desire for a peaceful life out in the country, away from smog and noise and crime and being close to nature. |

Well it is obvious that his girl has left him. They probably had some arguments and fights and she had threatened to leave him. When he woke up and she and her stuff was gone, he knew she had left for good. He might not have come from a good enough family, wasn't making enough money, or didn't seem to have good prospects. Maybe she just decided she didn't love him. In any case he is feeling lost, confused, lonely , unloved and in a very dark place. The statement that love is coming to us all is less a statement of certainty than a need to believe that even the unworthy, and his ex-girlfriend may have placed him in that category, deserves love. Will he find love again? Probably, but not before he has to go through a very dark period. |

| This is an upbeat, romantic song that reminds me of the U.S. after WW2 when the troops were coming home. I guess I connect the word swingtown to swing music which was prevalent during the 40's. The man seems to be trying to convince his girlfriend / wife that the hard work and deprivation of war is over, and now is the time to go party. | |

To me, the man on the silver mountain is a guy who is a great leader. A great leader is the light and the dark, he knows when to show mercy and also when to kick someone's ass. He greatly values honesty and is very perceptive, he KNOWS when someone is lying to him and punishes accordingly, and he also KNOWS when someone is beaten down and needs a helping hand and he provides it. A real life example is the character Bigfoot in Anthony Bourdain's book " Kitchen Confidential ". Here are some key passages from the chapter called Bigfoot, " Bigfoot understood - as I came to understand - that character is far more important than skills or employment history. Skills can be taught. Character you either have or you don't. Bigfoot understood that there are two types of people in the world: those who do what they say they are going to do - and everyone else ". That also reminds me of something i read about Navy Seals. If a Seal promises you that he will do something, then he will do it or die trying to do it. If you promise a Navy Seal that you will do something and then you just decide to forget it, well you probably won't live too long after that mistake. At times living in this world you have to be hard and cold or warm and soft. The hard and soft are of the same person and neither is evil. The hard helps keep you from becoming victims of conmen and other criminals. The soft helps you see when to show mercy or to provide a helping hand. |
