Okay, first verse; it clearly states that they were living alone together, and they weren't doing to well, so they decided to go to the city, and try and make their way there, so they got up and left in verse two, 'I remember thinking we could make it out somehow, if somehow we ever took a chance,' and they took off and didn't look back, then, in the city, "The days roll hard, and the night move fast," meaning that they were in the fast lane, living life, and going through the motions, and they might've separated, and now he wants back what they had, no, they were just going through the motions so much, that they had no time to spend together, and they were slowly, gradually falling apart, and in the chorus, he was wanting to get out of the rut that they were stuck in, and stop being 'smoke and mirrors' (fake) people, and he wanted to now leave the city and drive to where things seemed simpler, and in the last chorus, it started at the forth line, and added three more lines to it, and those lines basically say, that they just have each other, and they should hold onto that, and the plans that they had before their problems started, because they were 'living smoke and mirrors anyway. So that's what it means to me, I hope that it helps anyone that doesn't get the song. :) |
