Tupac Shakur – Hail Mary Lyrics 13 years ago
And this comes from someone who calls himself FireDemon666. Quit "hating" out of jealousy, and truly try to understand what the man was trying to say, than make a conscious decision about your feelings. You might surprise yourself if you actually stepped outside of your racist upbringing.

City and Colour – What Makes a Man? Lyrics 14 years ago
Great insight. Thanks. Just posted a response and didn't even think to look at the suicide angle until after I just read your comments now and I agree 100%. Def suicidal tones in the lyrics - the train as symbolic of death is a interesting metaphor. It makes the song that much more powerful on an emotional note in dealing with the issue of suicide too.

City and Colour – What Makes a Man? Lyrics 14 years ago
I believe this song is about the banality/boredom of life. Like many other lyrics from Dallas Green, this song touches on strong personal feelings/emotions. The more we live our lives to the fullest, the more we experience (at least in a sense)how meaningless/senseless it is - how it seems that life (people) fail us when we need them most. To dive more in-depth, it's about a man who tried/continues to try his best yet he's always one step ahead of the mentality of those in his life that besets him - whereas his life is a constant struggle of his own conscious between the fine line of right or wrong (the angel/devil on his shoulder). "What makes a man want to break a heart with ease? I think I know. I think I might now." Yes, when we have self knowledge and experienced the way the world works (or the way the game's played!)how easy it is to see through someone - in this case, let's say a woman - yet give her your all, and low and behold she predictably becomes distant and self-righteous. Ahh how easy it is to break a heart, aye? "What makes a man pray when he's about to die? I think I know. I think I might now." WOW! How great sometime simple lyrics can be. I percieve these lyrics of a man who's full of guilt and fear and/or that the older you get the more you start to think about an afterlife in regard to the consequences of the choices we made/make. In closing, needless to say to fans of City and Colour, what drives home all the lyrics is the heartfelt truth in the voice and music of Dallas Green. Suffering never sounded so beautiful - Dallas Green/City and Colour DEFINE melancholy.

The Cure – The Last Day of Summer Lyrics 14 years ago
It's about hitting rock bottom. There can come a time in our life when, for the most part, everything we once believed in no longer holds as much significance to us. To me, at least how I always percieved it, the lyrics are about a failed man/woman relationship. Throughout the lyrics, the point that is expressed is that nothing seems to matter anymore - all hope is gone. This is driven home, in my opunion, by the most beautiful part of the song, the pre-chorus that so darkly flows with a solemn mood, "It used to be so easy I never even tried, yeah, it used to be so easy...". This is the final realization that all is gone, everything that once once held dear to the heart has vanished in an instant of self reflection. Though most songs have a tendency to usually end on a positive note, lyrics that usually reflect a glimmer of hope, this one stands out in stark contrast as one that never strays from it's somber tone. In this sense, the song almost has a reversed therapeutic value to it, a melancholy of sorts, in a sober thoughtfulness type of way. Remember, no hope is better than false hope. Also, the intro of this song, the music that sets the tone of the lyrics that are to follow is absolutely brilliant - it's structure musically is amazing and picture-perfect. All in all, the song "The Last Day Of Summer" contains perfect music, perfect lyrics, a perfect theme/tone, and it's all perfectly paced (doesn't bore the listener!) for an eventful five minutes. What else is there to say? Robert Smith and The Cure at their finest.

Van Morrison – I'm Not Feeling It Anymore Lyrics 14 years ago
Self-Knowledge. Verse one is about getting too far ahead of ourselves, coming to the conclusion that it's hard to trust in people who constantly betray us. At times, it's best to trust in no one but ourselves. Verse two I visualize someone who, despite the great time they're having in an empirical sense, still feel a sense of distance from others internally. Verse three deals with the idea of fame/popularity, and how it's all meaningless if you have to sell your soul to achieve it. Also, how you're drawn into playing a certain character that isn't you and how it wears you out. It's lonely at top, as they say. Verse four deals with the same issue, money doesn't guarentee us automatic happiness/love, and that many times, the best things in life are free, so to speak. It's the little things that matter(love, trust, truth, compassion, empathy,e tc.), life can be no another way other than that which it is - one day at a a time. Verse Five deals with how we'll never find happiness trying to appease/impress others. We can't be too happy without our own approval - it's impossible to love others unless we love ourselves first. The longest journey is inward; Self-Knowledge. The last lines in verse five is biblical in thought: "You show know the truth and the truth shall set you free" - Jesus

Eminem – Kim Lyrics 14 years ago
Nothing new to say in the regard that this song is graphic, emotional-laced and controversial. To Eminem's talent, this is what great art does, provoke us. Not only will a song so graphic in description bring up the subject matter to further investigate/inquiry about, but it's also very therapeutic to listen to. Many songs we just LISTEN to, Some songs we just HEAR, and once in awhile, a song comes along that we can actually FEEL. This song you can FEEL, I personally can relate/empathize with Eminem. However, I also do understand that granted on our relationship experience, many might not be able to relate to the angst/pain that Eminem conveys so artistically and amazing in this song too. Another thing about this song that makes it unique, is that it's not really a rap song. And this isn't to say that Eminem isn't a rapper and that this song is a sell-out. I believe that this song bears testament to the greatness of Eminem as a talented artist and as a entertainer. I couldn't imagine no other artist coming close to recording a song so dark, direct and mesmerizing. And in regard to those people who feel the need to take these lyrics literally (as in the physical sense of harm they echo - or scream), and also those who confuse Eminem the artist, with Marshall the man, I'll just leave with this profound quote: Art is a lie that helps us realize the truth."-Pablo Picasso.

Tupac Shakur – Unconditional Love Lyrics 14 years ago
'Pac slowing it down a bit, and getting pretty emotional and introspective. The beauty of this song is in the raw vocal delivery - you can sense an honesty about the personal subject matter. A very important missprint in the lyrics I want to point out is that, in my opinion, 'Pac's verse isn't "ask mama why God deserved to die...," rather it's "ask mama why I got this URGE to DIE..." To me, this is a very pivotal point because I believe it help explains his suicidal tendencis when he wrote this song.(I'm familiar with the MC Hammer theory, and that's quite possible, but to me, it's a very PERSONAL 2PAC song, so I would be surprised if He actually did write it for MC Hammer.) And for those who questioned on whether or not Pac was suicidal, he, in his own words declares this in the film "Tupac: Resurrection." The film also shows a suicide note that Pac wrote. Once again, to reiterate, this is important because it shows the deepest feeling of pain and suffering he was personally experiencing at that certain point of his life. The rest of the song, after the first few verses establishes this fact (his pain/suffering), helps express the "Unconditional Love" 'Pac still felt for those close to his heart. This song is a great example of how Pac's fans FEEL his music just as much as HEAR his music. The honesty and truth Pac artistically expresses in this song has caused many to shed a tear...and it will continue to do so. RIP 2PAC.

Tupac Shakur – Black Jesus Lyrics 14 years ago
All great art challenges us. To be great is to be misunderstood. 2Pac, as an artist and as a man of diverse knowledge, was out of step with society (sheep) in that sense. He was above it, his experiences allowed him to be the great entertainer/writer he was. A song like "Black Jesus" is by no means racist, or I believe in 2Pac's heart intended to disrespect anyone else's belief in who they choose to call "Jesus," "God," "Allah," etc. "Black Jesus" for 'Pac was just an expression of the hyprocrisy he witness in his lifetime, brought on my preachers, priests, the church, etc. Artistically, in this song, "Black Jesus," was simply something tangible, something 'Pac was using as a metaphor for the so-called "thugs" of the world. "A saint we can trust to help carry us through." Throughout civilazation, "Jesus" for the most part is portrayed as a blue-eyed, blond hair, more or less white man (with nice abs I might add). This is an image created by man - those in power. Another great line in a 'Pac song to express his observation of this is in "Still I Rise." The great verse is when 'Pac, talking about the "cruel world" asks: "how can I survive? they got be asking white Jesus will a ni**a live ir die. 'Cause the Lord can't see us in the deep dark clouds of the projects..." This is 'Pac searching inward, questioning what he's been taught. Doubt is the sign of our intelligence. As stated, 'Pac's music/legacy will never die because you can't kill the Truth of his being, the honesty/passion in which his life/work embodied. His work will always spark controversy, simply because it forces us to deal with issues we'd rather not. A final observation, instead of just bashing 2Pac or rap in general, it would be nice if the people who did do that ACTUALLY took the time to listen to what some rappers are really trying to say. There's alot of great lyrics in the rap music industry.

Hatebreed – Unloved Lyrics 14 years ago
Like many songs, this song also could be interpreted various ways. For me, I simply believe it is an ex-love/ex-girlfriend that the song is about. Someone who came back into his life, someone, who he obviously wants nothing to do with anymore. "You made me realize everything I've ever known of love was pain." However, as stated, it could easily be about any one specific person. The bottom line is that the person he's singing to has obviously pissed him off.

Dashboard Confessional – The Shade of Poison Trees Lyrics 14 years ago
"Is there truth in your pain? you decide." If that lyric has never brought tears to your eyes, you are not human. Or at least, haven't suffered enough yet in a relationship, or life in general. It's only when we realize that life is going nowhere that it begins to make sense. Blessed is he who suffered for he has found life. From the singers viewpoint, he's suffered the same pain as the person he's talking to is going through as of present. He (singer) overcame it. And now he lends a helping hand, "is there truth in your pain? you decide." In general, that's what whole song is about, the singer telling/asking someone (through Socratic method) what it is that matters most to them - Self-Reliance. Helping them to help themselves. Great song to put on a mix cd (to slow pace)for someone you really care about.

John Lennon – God Lyrics 14 years ago
This is real simple one. This song is about John Lennon coming full circle with his life. Sometimes we have to destroy everything to begin anew. John throughout this song denounces all the things he once so adamantly believed in. And now he no longer believes in...Magic, Jesus, Elvis, Beatles ("the dream is over"), to name a few; he has finally found self reliance in himself, and his better half, through the powerful medium of love, whereas love is the only real thing because "God is only a concept by which we measure our pain." Thus the reason why he says he only believes in him ("...I'm just John") and Yoko at the end of the song. An absolutely brilliant song. Like "Imagine," it's simplicity at its finest, yet a deep spiritual subject matter. For him to write this at such a young age bears testament to the greatness of his gift as an artist. By no means is this an anti faith song, it's a pro religion song. Religion, as in the truest sense of the world - living a good life and finding happiness in our own heart and souls.

Blues Traveler – The Mountains Win Again Lyrics 14 years ago
The "Moutains" are girls/women, from a male singers point of view. They "always" win...again. They are "un-moveable," they (woman aka mountains) "pick and choose". At least, that's how I've enjoyed the song throughout the years with that thought process. However, the "mountains" being "emotions" does make sense also I believe.
