Whiskeytown – Jacksonville Skyline Lyrics 12 years ago
Yes! I absolutely agree with you about the last two lines--they are a beautiful, perfect surprise, I feel incredibly happy every time I hear them. It is one of my most favorite Ryan Adams songs.

Ryan Adams – Do I Wait Lyrics 12 years ago
About struggling with the end of a relationship...wanting to get it back, but knowing no matter how long you wait and wish otherwise, it is over. So much emotion in the simple lines, "But you're never coming back" and "Do we say goodbye?"

I agree with lovetwaits, as Ryan Adams grows older his songwriting and singing have become richer, fuller, deeper. Heartbreakingly beautiful, like so many of this artist's songs.

Love as Laughter – In Amber Lyrics 14 years ago
Correction: Did you like me at the Popsicle stand?

I love this song. To me, he's singing to the people who love him about the way he's kept himself numb so he couldn't feel anything, and he's been stuck in a passive, powerless state of being. He was preserved in amber at a certain level of being after a traumatic event, or maybe by addictions, maybe because of fear...but whatever it was, he did it to himself. And he's wondering whether the people he loves will still love him when he breaks out and comes back to life--and whether he'll still love himself.

Tori Amos – Pancake Lyrics 14 years ago
My favorite song from a great album.

"Messiahs need people dying in their name" has a lot of resonance. Not only is it referencing the millions who've died in religious wars from medieval to modern times, including the 9-11 suicide bombers, it could also refer to the darker aspects of traditional Catholicism, which has led its believers to try to "kill" aspects of themselves that the church condemns: their own sexuality, political power, and independent/scientific thought. Kill the Satan within!

This all connects to: "Segregate the mind from body and soul." She's talking about the whole messed up Judeo-Christian dichotomy that pits the "sinful" body against the "godly" spirit and mind. Whereas pre-Christian and other spiritual belief systems are more holistic and don't condemn humans as naturally evil and in need of salvation....

Mad Season – River of Deceit Lyrics 14 years ago
This is such a haunting song, and incredibly sad. If Lane could’ve stopped choosing that pain, I like to imagine he could be loving his life right now, maybe have his own family, and feel the beauty of the world more than the pain of the world. Because they’re both there.

To me, the song is about a hopeless way of looking at our lives and our selves, and how hopelessness and the downward spiral can take over. We could as easily choose joy, but we dwell on the pain. It’s easy to let it suck you down–but the lie is to think that pain is all that exists, and all that we’re meant for, and that it’s all we are.

Neko Case – Hold On, Hold On Lyrics 14 years ago
Feeling unanchored or detached from what's going on? Just being on another plane than the people you're around....

Neko Case – This Tornado Loves You Lyrics 14 years ago
Neko is a well-known animal advocate. I think the lines "I left them motherless...fatherlesss/their souls hanging inside out from their mouths/but it's never enough" and "their broken necks will line the ditch/until you stop this madness" are about the destruction that humans (tornadoes) and their machines visit upon animals in particular, and nature overall. I love the nature imagery, especially the little bridge section "My love, I am an owl on the sill in the evening...." And powerful love is like a force of nature. Gorgeous song.
