Relating it to my own life, the story I got from the lyrics was a father talking to his son about what a poor father he's been. In the first verse, it sounds like the speaker is talking about self-esteem and dealing with psychological problems (that verse really struck a chord with me). The bit where he mentions the mother, to me, it sounded like he could have been abusing her. In that same verse, he could be telling his son to back down, don't fight back, because he's seen what his father's capable of. |

So I looked at SOAD's site and their lyrics actually say "geeks." The last time I checked (a long time ago), I didn't see lyrics on their site, but I decided to check and well, they're up.
I hope whoever maintains the site actually typed it themselves and didn't just take it from somewhere.

I'm pretty sure it is "hicks." I don't know why they'd call them geeks when the type of people who fit the rest of the sentence are typically called hicks -- flag-waving and ignorant? Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's hicks. |

I agree with most things that were said about what this song means (mostly the comments about breaking up). It always reminds me of my ex, who was lame enough to break up with me via email while he's studying abroad in France. I was wandering around Barnes and Noble when I heard this song. I wasn't paying much attention to the music, though; I thought it sounded nice, but it didn't really hook me until the part "Come back to me my darling" played. I like the innocence of her voice; it makes that part beautifully depressing.

Shouldn't the third line be "and how the pollen fell"
Yes.
As for poisonheart's comment, personally, I don't believe it's a reference to the birds and the bees. I don't see anything sexual in the song. If you've heard their other songs, they have references to mythical creatures and such (e.g. mermaids and dragons) and to me, the bees and having the ability to tell them to do things -- like commanding them to trace this person's face -- just seemed consistent with their whole dreamy, fairy tale-like motif. |

If I didn't read the lyrics, it probably would've taken a while to figure out what he was saying.. |
