I think this can be interpreted to say that he is warning a girl of what guys will do for sex. I've heard multiple accusations of it being a "date rape song" and I'd like to address some of those. But I think it's a warning call, communicating something that not every guy who says what he says will really mean it. In this song, Jesse personifies some asshole at a party who targets a girl who's had a few too many, and closes her off from the world to take advantage of her - faking his feelings and filling her up with empty words. Think about it, nobody would write a song about date rape that's just about him blatantly taking advantage of some drunk girl at a party. Even if he did rape someone or something like that, it would be stupid to just say that - in every other one of Jesse's songs he tries to communicate something, and jumping to "date rape" is way too straightforward. Ultimately, I think he's saying that there are boys that will seek to only pleasure themselves by faking feelings for someone. I'm generally supportive of feminism, and I obviously see how someone could read these lyrics and instantly be disgusted. But that's the nature of the song, it's a warning, and it's supposed to carry it's message on shock value. Even though I hate references to rape in songs like these, I think that feminists targeting it is misdirected - there's more to it and people should try to read between the lines before they jump to conclusions. Keep the fight, and know your targets well. |

Furthermore, people use the amount of time between when you see lightning and hear thunder as a sort of tool for determining how far away a storm is. I think The Space Between Lightning and Thunder plays into this because he's coming down to the inevitable moment of breakup. Also, But I held an axe that could've felled a path but I was too scared to go it alone I think these lines mean that he could have ended it ages ago, but he was afraid of being alone/being without his significant other. |

I'm guess this has to do with prolonging a relationship, when you know there's an inevitable end to it, like one partner is moving away, going to college, etc. What with the whole "This is the last time you will see me" and "we thought we had unlimited time" I'm getting the vibe that there's someone in his life he has to let go, but he is reluctant to do so. |

I've always thought that this song was about growing up, and losing the optimism of a younger life. Something inside us dies, and we become shells just chasing after survival. I think the "million little gods causing rainstorms turning every good thing to rust" refers to the cynicism of older generations casting down on the more optimistic, activistic younger generations. How we grow up wanting these things, but as we become older, we lose touch and become the people we hated. I think the lightning bolts has to do with the destructiveness of the older (or younger) generations. |

| It's about heading off to college and being forced to break up with your girlfriend... It's bittersweet because they're meeting new people, but they have to end their love so abruptly because they can't interfere with one another's futures... | |
