this post is so old but hat is my favorite song too....I have this song on an r.e.m. mix right after Orange Crush and I keep thinking of the vets just slightly older than me that came home form nam and how that world would make anyone want to live on high....even those that thought they were at the time of the war(s)...that is also my favorite line (So I dive into a pool...") and it makes me think of Keats....living on high does not always mean in an artificial way...it means to feel everything so deeply that you you are on high and also - it is possible to happen at the same time - to sink so low simply by knowing the depths that exist.... |

Ok..this song keeps coming back to me and I don't beleive it is anything simple or simply metaphorical. When I listen to this song, I think of someone who is lost in the overwhelming media/glitz/social hype/commercialism/flippancy/easy physicality of a more or less plastic world...the "new religion" of mankind which does not sit well...it is from someone who tries to fit in and has real feelings for humanity but gets lost in the meanignlessness of it all....I listened to it when it first came out...and I am still totally mixed up with up in it.... |
