I think this song goes further than social justice. To me it always seemed like one of Pac's favorite topics to rap about was the Bible/Gospel/Religion. I think this song first deals with the fact that we need to stop looking for WORLD peace when we're falling apart here. This song was released when everyone was about saving the world from AIDS or dismantling nukes and stuff, ignoring the hungry and drug addicted here. Second, I think Pac was answering the people that said he couldn't have been a Christian due to his lifestyle. He even states about 'Am I less Holy, because I took a puff of blunt, and drink a beer with my homies?' He then mentions that 'If I upset you, just remember the Lord isn't finished with me yet.' Sometimes I think we forget that when we come to God, we don't become perfect overnight. It's a process. It's not for us to look at that person and say 'they drink, they can't be saved.' Maybe they were addicted before coming to God and they cry for God to save them, but fall to temptation still. Instead, we need to help them. We're all at different points of our walks with God. Some still sin a lot, others sin less, but we're all still walking for the same goal. Third, Tupac is hoping that people realize how messed up things are and correct them before it's too late. Though sadly, we seem to be getting worse. But this song is pretty inspirational. That's my take on it. |

This song is about Salvation and the belief that faith in Jesus Christ will raise the believers in the end times with the sound of a trumpet. He's proclaiming that nothing will hold him down because Jesus already has him, ready for resurrection. There are quite a few biblical references here to back it up such as meeting Jesus in the air (Revelations), meet me by the river (Christian Hymn), and talking of rising right out of the ground. Amazing song. |

I see this song having two possible meaning depending on how you want to take it. Looking at the lyrics, it's about a person who's surrounded by a ton of bad stuff, hoping they're dreaming with all the bad stuff around them. And they're saying when they do wake up, everything will be better. It could be social commentary about how bad the world is. It could also be a metaphor for someone having a nightmare. They're confused on what's happening and just hope it ends to a better life.
The other meaning is a religious person. They're surrounded by sin and hoping to stay away from it, asking people to pray for them. The line 'I'm lost and I'm found, but I can't touch the ground' is a reference to the bible. In the prodigal son, the father says 'My son was lost, but now he's found.' A reference to Christians. And the narrator is asking for prayers to help them survive without falling. Also, a lot of Christians say that this life doesn't matter, because Heaven will be amazing, so this life is like a bad dream. Either or. |

I think this is about life. I'm going to use a comparison that may or may not have been intentional, but in the bible, Paul in Corinthians says that life is a race and we should run the best race. To me, this is likening life to a race. Anything positive you do leaves an imprint on the world. You affect people, places, things. And then when you do something else, its saying you're doing it on purpose. The third step (or thing you do) is saying that you're dedicated to doing this, and the fourth step is pretty much saying you've set a pace. It also talks about believing in Jesus and Heaven as inspiration, because it's real and what he knows. The one concert video I saw of this song, the singer even points up while he sings it. To me, this song is someone who sees life as a race, he's focusing on God to get him through because God and Heaven are the rewards (and helping hand to get through), and he's doing as much possible to make a difference in the world for the best. |

I was actually going to post kind of what you posted. The song seems to be both literal and metaphor. Like you said, the beginning is about David. But the second part about cutting hair, is probably about Samson. I think it's about how people get enticed with their own lust and love and take their eyes off God, but it fails. And at first, they're like 'Oh come on, I did it for this.' And they're trying to rationalize it to God and them self (which we all do when we really mess up). But then they realize they messed up and admit they screwed up and humble themselves to God. At the end, they all pretty much say, 'I'm sorry God. I didn't go to you and tried on my own. I gave in to myself. I got too caught up in this. I tried, but it wasn't hard enough.' And they then they usually go back with God and sing praises because He forgave them or helped them out. |
