Joss Stone – Free Me Lyrics 14 years ago
I can't believe no one has mentioned the underlying meaning of this song! Well, this is my theory. By the time she made this, her 4th album, Joss was sick and tired of being in the clutches of a major label and having no creative control. She had a contract with EMI and released her albums under the EMI label Virgin Records - including the album "Free Me." In the title track, she expresses her desire to be free from others' control, people telling her how to think, what to do, how to express herself, etc. Who do you think this was directed at? Well there's a major clue in the last few seconds of the song - as she sings "Free me, free me, free me," etc. she slips in 3 little letters at the end: "EMI"! Seriously, listen to the end and you'll hear it loud and clear. "Free me, free me, free me, E-M-I!" I love it! She slipped in a subtle kiss-off to her label even as she released an album through it. Much like Sara Bareilles did with her songs "Love Song" and "Bottle It Up." Tellingly, after this album Joss left EMI and launched her own label, releasing her 5th album on her own in 2011.
