This song to me is about waiting to find that perfect person for you, even though they haven't yet manifested themselves to you. Looking back and seeing all your past "dodged bullets" (relationships) as a string of "consolation prizes". A deeper analysis, although maybe unwarranted, may even be derived. That even though the song doesn't explicitly say so, maybe this person doesn't even exist for some, or anyone, and is just an unattainable concoction of a person's deepest desires for the perfect relationship partner. |

Only two comments huh? My favorite track on American Life. Basically about divorce I think. How kids are naive when they are young and don't have a sense about the world and the capacity to understand adult concepts: love, marriage, divorce, religion, mortality. Best part of the song: I made a vow that I would never need another person ever Turned my heart into a cage, a victim of a kind of rage |

On a more serious note... Notice in the music video there is a back and forth progression between the three bandmates being inside an abandoned rundown hospital that is exploding all around them and also being isolated inside a room in the same hospital. You can tell by their set of outfits which scenes are which. You'll notice that in the scenes where they are running from the collapse of the hospital, which I'm sure signify the world "turning into a monster (turning against them)" at the end of it after the three isolated band members meet up and start run together as a group they run into the dead end room where their counterparts seemed to be wallowing in agony (hitting and kicking the walls) but when they arrive their counterparts have vanished almost as if they had ascended leaving their gear behind (microphone, guitars, etc) and all becomes peaceful. |

I thought this song was about stopping Lady Gaga's fanbase count from escalating too far. "I'll stop the whole world from turning into a monster". No? |

| I think a lot of times we automatically assume that love is by default a good thing. | |
| Alanis Morissette – Can't Not Lyrics | 14 years ago |

My personal favorite song by Alanis spanning all her albums thus far. I've sat in the dark replaying this song over and over trying to piece together a semblance of meaning -- but it is all too difficult. I can piece together individual lyrics, but the overall theme alludes me. I think the fact that she starts off with "because *I* can't not" and then transitions to "because *we* can't not" is very telling though. |

I agree that it is indeed three different conversations and at the start of those outings she was hoping for a deeper connection to digress. But, as the separate situations ensue, there becomes a ground-breaking moment where conflicting opinions clash and ruin the desired outcome. All three conversations share a quality of judgements being passed; being a hypocrite for being a vegetarian but still wearing leather, being subtlety patronized by a waiter as if she wasn't as sophisticated (although maybe she feels she read into his comment too much), and having to hold her tongue to avoid the awkwardness of passing judgement. |

"Oh this state of ecstacy Nothing but net could ever give to me" I think she is equating her state of happiness with the basketball concept "nothing but net" which basically means you nailed it and it is satisfying to do so. |
