Blueboy – Miss U.K. Lyrics 13 years ago
Isn't it:
"they taught it at my school last Jubilee"?

The Durutti Column – Sleep will come Lyrics 13 years ago
Written about Ian Curtis apparently. Don't really get the connection but a beautiful song sung by Jez Kerr of A Certain Ratio.

The Smiths – Half a Person Lyrics 13 years ago
Seems to be partially inspired by Anne Marie McVeigh. A girl that Morrissey was in love with for years before the Smiths. Of course, there are other characters in there too.

The Smiths – Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others Lyrics 13 years ago
I seem to remember that in interviews at the time, Morrissey was saying how ridiculous it was that he'd only just noticed how sexual women's bodies were. Make of that what you will.

The Smiths – Paint a Vulgar Picture Lyrics 13 years ago
Nah, can't buy that being about Ian Curtis. Morrissey was never a fan, so all that fawning would never have happened. Plus, this is obviously about someone who was a major star - something Ian never was. Hell, he wasn't even alive when Love Will Tear Us Apart was released.

It is obviously about someone now dead, and probably by suicide. There's a few to choose from but whoever it is, Moz was obviously a fan - and still is despite it all. And, given that it's a soundcheck, not Oscar Wilde. For once.

"You just haven't earned it yet, baby" as someone stated, was said by Geoff Travis of their record company when they complained about promotion.

The Smiths – Miserable Lie Lyrics 13 years ago
Even though the lyrics were on the sleeve, for some reason I always thought they were:
"I need a vice - nobody ever looks at me twice"

...which I kinda prefer.

Morrissey – Suedehead Lyrics 13 years ago
Morrissey's lyrics are deliberately non-gender based (i.e. they could be interpreted as gay or straight). That was directly inspired by the lyrics and tone of Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks. As for sexuality, Steven 100% had girlfriends when he was younger. I've no idea if boyfriends came later in life.

And it's definitely 'good lay'. I remember the bootleg interview but Morrissey was always very humorous in interviews. Wasn't that the same one, where he was complaining about unemployment, then blaming Katie Boyle for the ills of the world?

The Fall – How I Wrote Elastic Man Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this is about Jack Cole. He was the writer/creator of Plastic Man, who, at a young age (43), killed himself. No-one's quite sure why. Jack also wrote Mystery in Space comics (although not for the Daily Mail). However, he left comics behind when the industry faded, going off to work for Playboy (Leather Thighs?)

As for whether it's plastic or elastic, well...in the comics, petty villain Eel O'Brien falls into a vat of acid and becomes pliable ('you'll believe a man can ply'). He goes after his ex-criminal friends for abandoning him. This revenge act gets mistakenly interpreted as heroic by a reporter who asks what his superhero name is. Eel replies, "Elastic Man". However, the reporter runs off shouting Plastic Man, with Eel trying in vain to correct him.

Morrissey – Speedway Lyrics 13 years ago
This song wasn't far off the time when he was both having an argument with the NME and a friendship, which didn't seem to last, with David Bowie. I've always thought Bowie was the one who's name he could have dragged in if he'd wanted to twist the knife.

The Sisters of Mercy – Driven Like The Snow Lyrics 14 years ago
No doubt many hidden meanings but the song was inspired by a car crash in the snow that Eldritch was involved in.

The Sisters of Mercy – Marian Lyrics 14 years ago
Just to say, Marian is a real person who lives/lived in Berlin. No idea where she is now but Eldritch's girlfriend/friend at the time.

Billy Bragg – St. Swithin's Day Lyrics 14 years ago
Most of Billy Bragg's songs are love songs. Politics is a small, but important, part of his repertoire.

I believe it is related to the forty days rain or sun. He's comparing both his mood and sex to the weather. He's obviously, um, 'relieving himself' "with [his] own hands" but it doesn't come close to real passionate sex (the thunder and the rain). But they can't get along, so split up. He's feeling down (the shadow over the land - his melancholy mood) but feels there's still something beautiful about their relationship worth celebrating (the sun still shines from behind it).

Trembling Blue Stars – All Eternal Things Lyrics 14 years ago
Sounds like a paean for an old love ("embers of sadness still glow, something hasn't quite flown" - Annemari perhaps?) as the singer leaves it behind for a new love (Beth?). Slowly, his new love is becoming the rock his world is built upon ("I know you won't let go of the string"). His new love understands his previous feelings. His hurt. His now receding life. No jealousy, no anger. Simply compassion and understanding. Too beautiful for this world.

The Wedding Present – Dalliance Lyrics 14 years ago
The song was written about the British author of 'racy' novels, Jilly Cooper. Her husband was revealed to have been having an affair for years. When the story broke, he went back to Jilly, saying it was just a dalliance. Gedge thought of the heart-broken mistress, who was thrown aside and the affair just treated as a little bit of fun despite all that time. He just changed the sex as he found it difficult to sing about a man in those terms.
