A lot of these ideas have been taking the lyrics literally. I'm not saying i'm correct but think about it in a situation or metaphorically. it's like being in a relationship with someone that you love so much but it turns at that there's another side to them that you don't know about (or at least won't accept) and the therapist is the person looking from the outside who is trying to get you to understand the person they actually are. once you do figure out about it, it turns out that they aren't the person you thought they were and the person you thought they were never truly existed at all. when you (the person in the song) learns the truth, you can't believe it and the betrayal pushes you to the point of attempted suicide or to something else like drug addiction (which would explain the 1cc because of heroine and other inject-able drugs). even with the spending every cent on gifts that were never really received thing comes along that idea in the sense that thought she literally received the gifts, she didn't take the importance of any of them or they put no change in her personality or views towards the gift sender.
just thoughts and interpretations lol. I'm sure that isn't the actual meaning but just rather a different interpretation lol |

| Silverstein – Giving Up Lyrics

i understand this song completely... it describes my feelings about someone i was once with perfectly.it's sorta about being on the receiving end of the break up. the whole "you're giving up on me" could either mean that the person was doing something wrong and the person they were with gave up on them or just that the person gave up on their feelings for them.(in my situation i was doing something wrong, i just didn't know it). "i know you've played out everything in your mind" refers to the person conducting the break up having planned out the way that they're going to break up with them. "and when you feel the pain,
i'm wishing i could stay. how can i say i love you back? you never made me happy." this is the person that was broken up with trying to get himself to stop caring and get over them (i've had these exact same thoughts run through my mind.) "you've laid yourself to sleep. I never said this wouldn't hurt" the person is now single and going through pain from having to break the other person's heart. (i know she felt this way). "you gave up everything. I never said i'd give it back" the person that did the break up gives up their feelings for them and the relationship and moves on, the person who was broken up with can't give up those feelings and can't fully move on (receiving love elsewhere doesn't replace my feelings my feelings for her). "i know you'll never change, I wont be good enough for you" the person that received the break up identifies that the person they miss is never going to change and ignore or help with the problems the receiver had and the receiver decides they aren't good enough to be with the one they still love.(i've learned of the reson she broke up with me and fixed it but i'm pretty sure i'm not gonna get another chance). "i know you'll make it through. i'll never be around to see" the receiver knows that the other person is going to be fine but is sure that they are never going to have even so much as a platonic relationship with them again. (half of the time i try to talk to her to be friends again or at least get closure, she ignores me or barely responds. she has a new boyfriend and, from what i've been told by mutual friends, is happy)
i never realized how much this song explains how i feel until now. |

actually in the lyric pamphlet from the special edition shane says "This song is the title track and ties in with the cover art and concept of the album artwork as a whole. The person on the front cover is torn between 2 situations. One is staying in the burning city behind him, a place he knows to be bad, and the other is to venture out into the watert a place that falls off into the unknown. This happens in many situations in life; whether it's a dead end job, a bad relationship, or a bad living situation, people need to realize that it's better to go into the unknown than stay in a place where they are unhappy and not progressing. This song is about getting through and realizing that things will not change by themselves. People need to take initiative in their own lives to be happy and successful" |

this made me angry at amy and feel bad for shaun. when something like that happens between you and another person you dont just go off and wrie a song that makes the other person sound bad.people get addicted to drugs. it happens. shaun went and got help. she could've stood by him and helped him kick the addiction. once your addicted to something you can't just go and say im done then never even think about doing drugs again. its hard to kick them and her breaking up with him and writing this song probably made him feel worse. |
