I agree with previous comments that the 'black line' is having the music gene or gift. It's pretty much a literal song but perhaps in the lyrics he's reflecting on fate, but for different circumstances and luck and how simple twists of fate (excuse the Bob reference)can lead to a different outcome... the fine line between success and failure, pleasure and pain. He might be looking out the window thinking maybe I could be that homeless guy ... except for different choices and luck things could be different .. but he's got his fingers crossed ... 'there by the grace of god' to borrow a phrase. Anyway that's my two cents |

I like your interpretation. I was thinking it was about waiting for the perfect girl (or guy), which seemed like settling for something less than love. But thinking about it in terms of the perfect relationship(the lottery) for no effort versus working to make a relationship perfect(paycheck) makes sense to me.
This is just about the best love song ever. Genius. Like it was waiting to be written. |

For what it's worth, my interpretation is it's similar to what Michael Stipe wrote in 'What's the Frequency Kenneth' in the line 'irony was the shackles of youth'. The irony being that when you're young you're so certain you know everything as if you're old & wise and when you're older you are less certain as if you're actually young and don't know much, more circumspect and aware things can be shades of grey. So it's the irony in 'I was so much older then I'm younger than that now', that's it's all ass(arse) about face. Older wiser is being freed from the shackles
