This song makes me think of the death of one of my good friends. I am not sure the original intent of the song, but it surely seems like a death has take place, either symbolically or literally. I imagine it being like the death of a friend, and dealing with the pain of saying goodbye and hoping that person is at peace. "Well ring the bells that lead you home," makes me think of church bells at a funeral. "Cause the only truth I've ever known Is that nothing ever hurts us more than love" That makes me think of the irony, after losing someone you love, maybe contemplating that if you had never known the person, you would not be in this pain. But the song seems to suggest that community is the answer, not isolation: "So circle up your best friends And we'll celebrate the way it ends" and "And those that know you most Can help you to live again So keep them* close As you're making your new start" And then also being grateful for life that still exists: "At least we live tonight." My favorite line in this whole EP are: "The day you finally turn to dust And finally hear your name Brings colors that will never fade away Sometimes the best in all of us Can still break down and still give up on love But it's never gone" It's just so hopeful! It seems to say, 'One day, we will all die, and it will be beautiful. so don't stop loving people even when it hurts.' Maybe that't the point. You risk pain by loving people, but loving people and being loved is also the answer to pain. It's what makes life mean something. its what makes life beautiful. At least, that's what this song means to me. |

To me it sounds like the speaker is singing to someone he is in love with who is struggling with depression or a secret past filled with regret. And he is kind of helplessly saying, "Please talk to me" and "you're not alone" but he knows that she/he can't hear him, and wont communicate, and it is ruining their relationship. Maybe the other party has even suggested that they go their separate ways. And the singer knows that the only thing that will make her/him better is to 'come clean' so-to-speak. To let go of the power of those secrets by revealing them. And he/she is saying that he/she will listen and not judge, and will be there no matter what, and that he/she wont give up. I live how he says, "Most get here and just give up, but I wont let us die without a fight." It's kind of a sad song because it doesn't resolve really. The only true resolve in the song is that of the singer who is unwilling to lose the relationship without a fight to the death.Kind of a like a 'I'll make it work, or die trying attitude', and is determined to fight no matter what. There is an irony, I think, because so few people feel like this about relationships, nowadays, or give up too easily, but he/she is saying, "Maybe you expect me to give up, but I won't." Its a true love song, not just about the mushy, feel-good times, but about fighting for something even when it might not seem worth it to anyone by you. |

i think this song is about losing love because of mistakes we make hurting ourselves, and being hurt, and being crippled by the pain. "We build our dreams And then burn them down To the ground Till they're gone" But then there is this challenge to find a way to move on and learn from our past mistakes. The whole EP seems to have a theme about loss, pain, depression, and brokenness, and finding love in the midst of this mess and being able to rise above it to something better. "We gotta find a way to love again While the words are ringing in our heads" It reminds me of the Sherwood song "My Dear Friend" which says "my attemts at love are not worth speaking of but my dear friend i'll try again." I think this song shares a similar sentiment. It's about finding hope and wholeness in the middle of being heartbroken, and not giving up on love because LOVE is the answer to healing the pain and brokenness. Whether it is love for yourself, or for another person, LOVE is the answer, not giving up. |
