| Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians – What I Am Lyrics | 4 years ago |

It seems to me that the irony here is that the song appears (from comments from the lyric writer) to be a sincere claim to want to keep things simple and to avoid deep thought, yet in keeping things simple it opens up all sorts of questions. When I heard the bit about being put in the shallow water, at first thought I thought it was supposed to be a criticism of people who like to imagine the world is simple and that the self is also simple. It seems all too easy to interpret this as being blissfully ignorant, which may be appealing, but hardly seems to be something to beat about. The fact that she uses the tautology 'What I am is what I am', also suggests an awareness that there is far more to the self than there is at first glance, otherwise there might be something more meaningful that could be said about it. It could also be interpreted in all sorts of ways (identity politics come to mind). Also, knowing that one is ignorant of so much, it seems unfortunate to them claim that the thoughts of those who do pay an interest offer nothing of more value than the words on a cereal box, except perhaps just to oneself. Ultimately, a song which sounds like it might be saying something seems in the end to be standing up for a dominant ideology I associate with the 80s - i.e. consume and don't worry about the consequences of your hedonistic lifestyle. Musically - good song! |

| This song could be about either a psycho/socio-path, or just the idea that as people are desensitized by what they read in the news and TV, porn, and anything else with shocking scenes, they start to become accepted. Like the rock, the planet and the atom bomb, it is possible to feel so detached from tragedy that it doesn't really affect you. It could also be about being distracted by hatred or revenge - knowing all along that all you want to do is kill someone and not feeling satisfied until you do. Then again, like most people seem to say, it could be about religion. | |

Once again amused by the comments about the lack of responses and how much people like the song...seems to miss the point really. This sounds like a song of frustration about someone who wants to be released from their current state of (probably emotional) agony. You can think of it as a relationship that has got to a point where it needs to move forward, or maybe ended, but something is getting in the way. Perhaps the person is angry because they see a straight-froward step to fix the problem but the other won't do it for some reason. It also talks about issues that are locked away so it can be about skeletons in closets. It could even be taken from the point of view of a criminal who wants his/her accomplice to confess together with them. Of course like all songs, it can be interpreted in all sorts of ways. At the moment, the relationship that needs to move forward is my personal favorite! |
