Arcade Fire – My Body Is a Cage Lyrics 14 years ago
this song is pretty straightforward. YOUR body is a cage. your spirit is trapped in it. you are shackled by time, and your body will rot and die in those chains. your body has no hope, the only place hope can be is in your spirit, that it will be set free.

first of all, he is knocking on both creationism and big bangism and more so big bangism. if there is not a creator than obviously not a set beginning, but if there is a creator, than there could be a set beginning. and then also there could be much unattainable knowledge that would cause our perception to be too limited to understand, thus causing doubt in a creator. second, i dont know if this was intentional, but the moderate climates is actually biblical: "I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!" -Revelation 3:15-16. Third, no matter how hard you try, no matter how hard anyone tries, you will never be able to prove creationism wrong, or right. You can believe one way or the other, but you can never actually prove what you believe in. however, this stalemate serves as an indication towards creationism because, as stated earlier, without a creator, knowledge could not be withheld from us. if there were no creator, we could prove it, but since we cant, there is. so hopefully me telling you this doesnt fall into the category of, "everytime you think your talking your just moving your mouth," but i guess even if it does, writing this has strengthened by belief just a little bit, so thats good. anyways, love you, bye.

Fleet Foxes – Helplessness Blues Lyrics 14 years ago
this is one of my favorite songs because of the lyrics. the opening lines are so beautiful. i love how he makes the snowflakes seem so pretentious for trying to be unique. if thoreau listened to this song, he probably would rather be the snowflake! i think this song is definitely very socialist in its views, but i think there is more to it. i don't think robin intended it to be christian, but it definitely is. as john 6:63 says, human effort accomplishes nothing. the snowflake is nothing. but the cog has a purpose. just as God has a purpose for every one of us. i would much rather rely on God and serve his purpose than be nothing. we are helpless and need God. Robin says he doesn't know who to believe. Being a functioning cog for some other purpose is even worse than being a snowflake! we have to follow the right person, not ourselves, not someone else, not some other principle, but God. I'm a counselor at a camp this summer, and during training week we went up to the challenge course and did various activities, one being a maze. a group of us was blindfolded and led to the maze; we were told to hold on to a rope and follow it and try to find our way out. as we were doing this the people in charge were saying, ask us if you need help!, and i instantly realized the point was to learn to ask for help, to rely on someone else. so i had them come over and asked if i was right; they said yes, so i kept walking around for fun and was the last one to ask for help and was surprised to find that the ropes were all tied between three trees within 20 feet of each other! some people think saying we are helpless and broken and limited is cynical, robin pecknold and i say it is uplifting! these qualities force us to rely on something outside of us, they force us to be a part of a purpose beyond ourselves.
