| i stopped reading when you said David Eisenhower is the son of Dwight Eisenhower, the former president's son is John Eisenhower... then i read on afterwards and yea, your argument for the meaning of the song would be more persuasive if you didn't muddle up song interpretation with your issues with right-wing populations. even if you are correct, people generally like to accept interpretations when they are free from bias. don't mix political opinion with song interpretation, keep your personal agenda out of it and just give facts, correct facts. | |

Does anyone have any self respect after posting that forward spam? Anyhow, throwing around the bipolar interpretations and relationship stories sometimes gets annoying because the reality of bipolar disorder is as a depressive disorder one spends the majority of their time in major depressive episodes and rarely gets the 'ups' described by bipolar. The majority of people describing their bipolar boyfriends and girlfriends are probably describing teenage relationship drama and not a legitimate bipolar diagnosis that requires mood stabilising treatment. Someone described the song being about a guy who wants the milk but won't buy the cow, and I like that notion to go on. |

I dig your personal interpretation andrew, but at the same time I think its personalising some of the lyrics. Like: How you maintain all them in a constant state of suspense For your own protection over their affection I think the second line reveals that its more about the empty living that goes on in the world of drugs. You never end up being connected to anyone cause users are all so insecure that they can't reveal themselves with any true depth. I like that you used the word 'facade' to describe your days using, but I think the notion of facade goes deeper than just maintaining. More lines like "your all pretension" and "for one or two minutes she liked you" reveal that its about someone who just can't show his true face while he's masked by his addiction. Keep up the fight man, I'm a little under a month away from my 1 year key tag myself. |

| I can't help myself. Every time I hear this song I think of Vladimir and Estragon and its as if the two made 'a promise to their mother' never to leave each other alone in the dark void of their hell, and someone is ambiguously suggesting they should leave and stay with each other in an attempt to weaken their resolve. I can just picture this song coming on at the end of Act I when they first agree to "go" and simply stare into nothingness. Act II has to end on a silent note though because you see just how weak the emptiness has made Vladimir. | |

| I think its about an addict. He's a charismatic drug addict, who keeps them "all them in a constant state of suspense" but at the core he spends all his time with people who he can't relate to on any real level. And naturally, he can't get clean, or "finish what you start". | |

Definitely agree with the feelings of social isolation, but i'll add that he's definitely referring to the mother complex in this: At a party he was waiting Looking kind of spooky and withdrawn Like he could be underwater The mighty mother with her hundred arms The mother complex can make it impossible to talk to girls because you never feel like you can live up to their expectations since your always entangled in a drama with your own unconscious mother figure who expects too much of you. |

Haven't seen anyone throw this interpretation out yet so I figured I'll toss mine in. It sounds like a psychotic episode. Smith did have a history with mental illness and its not out of the question that he might have met someone who watched movies and thought they were the stories of his 'life'. "pictures of me" is definitely talking about movies as the line "flirting with the flicks" explains. The rest of the song seems to fit. "jailer who sells personal hells" is probably as most suggested a reference to a drug dealer, and addiction is common among those with mental illness and drugs induce psychotic episodes. "everybody is dying just to get the disease" is almost optimistic in nature because everyone who doesn't suffer this delusion walks through life bored out of their mind, but the guy watching movies and thinking every movie is a story he acted a role in is walking around with an ongoing wild fantasy of an adventure. |

okay I couldn't contain myself. My interpretation is too fun. There's a passage in the bible that goes: The mighty man and the warrior The judge and the prophet The elder and the diviner The captain of 50 and the honorable man The counsellor and the expert artisan and the skillful enchanter -Isaiah 3 I picture a boy growing up through these 'phases' of life, and its all because he thought he knocked up his girlfriend so he ran away. In the run he passes through these 'phases' and now that hes back hes discovered she's '10 days late'. Its perfect timing for his return and he'll grow up and become the father as a 'skillful enchanter'. I mean, isn't that the father we all dream we had? lol. Yea, unless Third Eye Blind happens to be a Christian (or perhaps Jewish?) rock band i know this isn't what they meant :P Anyhow its dollar drink days at mcDonalds and I had to get this out before I got my large Nestea. But seriously, who is he saying "knowing you" to, or is someone saying "knowing you" to him? |

No one's commented on the phrase "knowing you", think its just a sort of 'goodbye' to his friend(s) as he moves on into parenthood? i don't think hes talking to the girl or the baby to born because the way the song sounds it seems optimistic "Well I can't wait to see this through". anyhow i got my own fantasy to the song that incorporates the phrase, but whenever I'm listening to music I go on long tangents of winding fantasy so I don't trust my interpretation :D |
