| Elliott Smith – True Love Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| its bona fide poetry. Elliott never glamourised addiction, he knows and yearns for what 'true love' should be, but it has forever been completely elusive to him, So instead he finds it in a drug which he bought off the street. At first, like any relationship , its pure bliss, but then when the (post honeymoon-)honeymoon masks come off, the true nature of this so called true love is revealed , she is controlling, possessive, abusive and manipulative. So he feebly attempts to end it, but she cunningly lures him back by telling him he needs cigarettes because she knows he will make a detour to go find her, and so he does, and whats worse to find that she's grown even stronger, he now accepts that this is bigger than him and can't do this alone, so he goes to rehab, where he finds himself playing the same sort of tricks he learned from her, only here on the doctors so he can get stronger drugs. In his numbness, he astutely observes, that there are others just like him, and it wasn't 'just me' after all, deprived of this beautiful elusive thing true love('the rose behind glass locked and closed') Sadly this is a mere observation and is in no way comforting to him, so he cries out to his maker (its lord not love btw) to take him away. a swan song indeed, RIP you beautiful tragic soul | |

| I gasp every time hear him say 'I hit you for the first time today' - most honest, painfully-shocking without trying to be song ever. beautiful | |

did anyone else notice the Mathematical references - 'Push back to SQUARE' and 'TRANSPOSE' ( "To move (a term) from one side of an algebraic equation to the other side, reversing its sign to maintain equality.")? I get the feeling this song is way more personal than just being about building confidence at school. Maybe thats what 'Back to school' is about , which I found sacrilege to this diamond of a song btw. Perhaps I'm reading too much into it and I'm only really focusing on the second part (seeing they were originally two different songs) but I'd say this could be about an experience he had with a math teacher or a girl in that class which went horribly wrong in some way. Its probably just too painful for him to reveal what its really about and thats why gave the explanation he gave. |

On Meeting-People-is-Easy Thom introduces this song as being about ' believing you're actually wonderful when you know its not true'. I don't think its about sex at all. Its about vanity. From the songwriters point of view I'd say its him buying into the hype and believing all the things people were saying about him; being a genius, his band being so brilliant etc. Being 'nude' refers to how a person is only most honest when they're truely are alone. Its that moment when all the 'noise' that helped perpetuate the lie is gone and now you have to take that good hard long look. Its here you realise you're NOT special and shame on you for believing you actually were ('You'll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking') |
