My Bloody Valentine – Sometimes Lyrics 10 years ago
"Welcome to your promises. Welcome to mine too."

The more I listen to this album — and I've heard it about a thousand times since 1998 — the more convinced I become that it's a loose concept record about emotional friction and sexual/romantic anticipation. Even the song titles (just pick any one of them) hint at this. The ghostly, interior-monologue nature of the male + female lyrics and vocals back this theory up. They're not so much speaking to each other (or anyone else) as much as to themselves ABOUT the other one. Like we all do when we're constantly thinking of that special new someone in our lives.

There's an irresistible, sexual push-pull dynamic going on within each song and also from song to song.

The National – All the Wine Lyrics 11 years ago
Life is hard. So he goes out. And he drinks. And he drinks more. And he drinks more. Until he feels he's the most awesome motherfucker ever. The child bride. The center of attention. The tall festival in the middle of the road forcing traffic to weave around him. He's sloshed off his ass, in love with the world.

But just underneath, sobriety and a return to real-life stress and heartache await. That's the dollhouse he's carrying — all those responsibilities he can barely manage that push him to nights like this.

My fix on it anyway.

Whatever the song's about, there's definitely suicide imagery throughout. Even if it's not trying to be about suicide.

It's like the recent Sia song, "Chandelier," which has double imagery about suicide.

There's a line that suggests that killing yourself won't change a thing:

"Hanging from chandeliers. Same small world at your heels." But knowing Berninger, he could say "hanging from chandeliers" and have it be about being drunk and feeling like a righteous mofo.

"All the very best of us string ourselves up for love." Again, a double meaning. Is it noble to kill yourself over love? Or is he saying it's noble to tie yourself to somebody you love and accept your limited options? The rest of the song indicates that he means the latter, but he's playing with that double meaning anyway.

The song has a big, resolute sound, like a ship crashing over waves toward it's port. That's what I like most about it.

These lyrics are so wrong it's hilarious ....

Great song, though. I should post what I believe to be the correct lyrics ... when I have time!

This seems to be a song about the "haves" and the "have-nots" in the world. The "haves" make the laws and benefit from them while leading to the slaughter the simple-minded "have-nots" that voted them into power.

This reads like a anti-politician song; a comment on politicians who use slogans (refrains) and charisma/celebrity to get regular plebs to vote for them, though the regular folks don't even know they're voting against their own best interests by putting them into power.

I think the "hiding from the sun" parts refer to the manufactured glory of megastar politicians who cynically spout 'plain-folk' altruisms although they don't have the interests of the common man in mind.

The song was written in a contentious election year (2004) and is so much more relevant today.
