Damien Rice – Animals Were Gone Lyrics 2 years ago
I think this is one of the most beautiful, and deeply emotional songs ever written. Damien is a musical and lyrical genius, as it still leaves me in awe so many years after hearing it.
To me, it speaks of deep heartache and reconciliation. While he's expressing the pain of losing the love of his life, he's also speaking to her ("please throw down your hair") as if she is listening, and is willing to reconsider."We could get a house and some boxers on the lawn;We could make babies and accidental songs" is a clever, and romantic way to paint her a picture of the life that he wants them to have. The bright chord structure suggests resolve and joy.(thougn he's been through hell). It's like they are at the end of a dark tunnel, and finally see the light, hence the reference.to the window being opened.
Saying he loves her depression and double chin is telling, because it says he loves her, despite her imperfections.
He regrets his actions, and learned from his mistakes with her. He wants to show her how much she means to him.
As far as the reference to the animals, I always thought it was literal. Perhaps he woke up and she had taken the dogs for a walk, and he just laid there contemplating everything.
I can't say enough about the strings and background vocals. They're classic and beautiful, and are reminiscent of the 40's.
And, I fully believe the song is about Lisa. I think he'll love her forever.

Conor Oberst – Artifact #1 Lyrics 10 years ago
It seems Conor loves a woman deeply, but is afraid to commit. I think the "suggestion" he refers to is her wanting to get married. His feelings for her are both a blessing and a curse, as he is afraid if he surrenders his heart, she will leave him. This is evident in the lines "If I had to tried to make you mine, you would have walked away".

When he says "I can't compete with memories. They never have to change", I think he's talking about how he will always be remembered as desirable to her because he was unattainable, whereas she may not have seen him that way had he been easy.

The lines "If someone says they know for certain, they're selling something certainly" seem to say that he can't promise her what will happen tomorrow, and that he will always be there. I think he loves her far more than he's letting on though, which is actually why he's pushing her away. It's not that he doesn't want to commit. It's that he can't bare the thought of being vulnerable to her, and potentially being left, so he goes ahead and walks away.

The last few lines "I keep looking for artifacts to prove that you were here. The sound that's been keeps echoing. It never disappears" are so heartbreaking to me. They make chills run up my spine every time I hear them. If you've ever loved someone that way, you will understand.

The Civil Wars – Pressing Flowers Lyrics 11 years ago
To press a flower is to make a memory, to commemorate a special moment. When he says "You and I, we're just pressing flowers" I think he's saying we're making memories. In the next part ("they're dying, but they're ours") I think he's saying that he knows their time won't last, and they have to go their separate ways.

Perhaps this is a couple who was together previously, and is coming back "meeting in the garden" to have one last moment together, but they know they cannot be together. Maybe they're with other people.

Such a hauntingly beautiful song! The Civil Wars always manage to trigger memories for me, and bring me joy and pain in equal measure.

Damien Rice – 9 Crimes Lyrics 11 years ago
The pain, and emotion of this song is so raw. It gives me chills!

I think it's about Damien's attempt to move on after his lover left him. He feels guilty for being wtih someone else, which is why he says "Leave me out with the waste". He's still thinking of her.

I think his "loaded gun" is symbolic of his heart. She wouldn't take it, so he went out with someone else, but he still loves her.

The line "If you don't shoot it, how am I supposed to hold it?" means how am I suppsoed to hold on/wait for you when you left me?

At the end when he says "Is that alright with you" they both say "no" because they're not OK with each other being wtih other people. They dont' want to move on.

Seven Mary Three – Cumbersome Lyrics 11 years ago
In my opinion, he feels like he is a burden to his significant other. That's pretty much what the word cumberseome means...heavy or burdensome.

He has done some things in the past that caused her great pain, and they can't seem to get through it. Even though they may not talk about it, the tension and mistrust is always there.

When he says "She calls me Goliath and I wear the David mask", I think he's saying that she still sees the things he's done wrong, despite the fact that he's trying to change for the better. This is also referenced in the "She remembers bridges, burns them to the ground" part.

She lives in fear of him hurting her again, which is how she justifies holding onto the past.

She loves him, but yet she distances herself from him as a protective mechanism.

As far as the arrow and the cross, I think the arrow refers to war and the cross referes to reconciliation. Once again, he's saying they have tried to reconcile (the cross) but the war (the arrow) remains.

He feels bad for what he's done, and ultimately like he doesn't deserve her. He feels ilke walking away is the only answer, even though it causes him great pain and turmoil.

Third Eye Blind – God of Wine Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this is a beautiful song...one of my favorite by 3EB. The song is obviously about someone he loves struggling with an addiction to alcohol. I always wondered if they died because of the line "the god of wine comes crashing through the headlights of a car". It sounds like there might have been an accident, or of course, it could just be poetic imagery. The somber tone by which he sings and periods of soft guitar alone seem to reveal the depths of sadness and isolation that he is feeling. I am grateful that in a world of poor pop excuses for rock. this band is still making true music.
