Bombay Bicycle Club – Magnet Lyrics 14 years ago
I think that this is a song about a guy who is in a long-term relationship. I think he seeks to end this relationship, but is ultimately too much of a coward to directly finish things. He meets another girl, someone "who makes him want to leave her behind", her meaning his girlfriend, but he somehow can't bring himself to finish his relationship. He keeps taking the backseat, pleasing others, burying his head in the sand to keep the peace. He can't choose which one to stay and which to leave behind, but he knows he needs to make a choice, "It's decision time". It seems he sought someone to help him end things in his relationship, but realizes that even this doesn’t make breaking up with her easy. He cheats on his girlfriend often "woken up in so many rooms", but doesn’t tell her because he can’t “break anyone’s mood”. Perhaps "almost fell in love" means that things were progressing with the other woman, but she ended it, she put the relationship to bed "it is time for bed" because she couldn't bear waiting around for the relationship with the girlfriend to end. Magnet describes the notion of being pulled towards someone or something, without having control over it. He finds himself drawn to this girl, but doesn't quite know what to do about it because he's such a coward with regard to his relationship.
