John Mayer – Daughters Lyrics 12 years ago
I can't stand this song and it seems to be getting more play on the radio lately. "Boys you can break. You'll find out how much they can take. Boys will be strong. And boys soldier on." Except that boys shoot up schools and turn into men who sexually assault women or carjack people because they weren't given good parental figures. Their parents just assumed "boys will be strong."

Not every song is about religion. Most songs are not about faith. This song is not about faith except in one's self.

Sting – Saint Augustine In Hell Lyrics 12 years ago
Until I checked this board, I never caught the line "Francis of Assisi could never be this good." It's very interesting to me since the recently elected pope of the Catholic Church took the name "Francis" in honor of Francis of Assisi.

Coldplay – Viva la Vida Lyrics 14 years ago
I think some people are overcomplicating this song. Yes it has much religious imagery, but it's not a song about spirituality,

The first verse - I used to have it all, now I'm a pauper living on the streets.

The second verse - I used to have power, people feared me and rightly so. But it's all gone now because everything I had was built on a poor foundation (similar to the housing bubble).

Chorus (first time) - this pulls from things we think of as religous, but the symbolism is really about the power - BIG church bells; BIG choirs with powerful voices. "Once you'd gone there was never, never an honest word..." Once she left him, his house of cards fell.

The third verse - I came in like a banshee full of promise and potential, but once I had the position, I found the world was more complicated than I thought, and I failed. Everyone who had rallied behind me now turned against me.

Chorus (second time) - similar to before, but now it's changed to show that not only is he past his prime, but he's approaching the end. And he knows he's going to have to pay for his sins. "Never an honest word, but that was when I ruled the world." He's changed since the fall, but it will never be enough to make up for the harm he caused to her and to everyone else.

The easiest way for me to think of this song is very literally. I imagine a man who deposed a tyrant and was made the new king. He was great at overthrowing, but not so great at running things (usually harder). He became deceitful and duplicitous and his wife/lover left him/turned on him/killed herself and is gone. But she was all he ever had that was good and true. When she was gone, it all fell apart.

Sheryl Crow – Always On Your Side Lyrics 14 years ago
I guess I have a different take on this song that just about everyone else. I think it's coming from a different place. To me, this speaks of someone who has recently (or not so recently) become single, and there was one guy in her past that she keeps being drawn back to, but he's not the man either one of them thought he would be, and they can't make it work. He was the one who was always waiting for her to pick him, but he can't be her lover now, and no one can figure out how it's all supposed to work out.

Phil Collins – We Fly So Close Lyrics 14 years ago
To me, this song speaks of the mistakes we make that haunt us: the relationships we didn't work hard enough at, the poor judgments we can't take back, and the urge to fix the mistakes that are in the past. "There are places that you know you know you should not go, but some bridges just won't burn" speaks directly to this. We know we should just leave it behind and get on with our lives, but we'll never be able to truly let go.

For me in particular, this song reminds me of my high school girlfriend. We dated off and on for some seven years (including 4 in high school). We were great together but something always pushed us apart, and I'm a big enough man to admit it was me and the fact that I didn't grow up fast enough for her. I did a lot of damage trying to stay close to her, and I know I hurt her in ways I can't fully appreciate, and I would give the world to fix it.

So she's always in my heart, always so close, and yet a world away.

Chris Cornell – You Know My Name Lyrics 14 years ago
First of all, some corrections are in order:

- By the merciless eyes I've deceived, not the merciless eyes of deceit.
- The coldest blood runs through my veins, not the coldness burns through my veins.
- I've seen diamonds cut through harder men, not I've seen this diamond cut through harder men.

The song IS sung from the point-of-view of "M" and tells a bit of history and prophecy. "By the merciless eyes I've deceived" is reference to everyone M had to back out of a deal with or double-cross because of changes in national priorities. The same is true for "You never saw me change the game we've that we have been playing." "And I will replace you" means simply that - you won't live forever and when you are inevitably killed, I'll go find a new 007.

Some not so subtle references to the film: The title, "You know my name" is reference to Bond learning that "M" wasn't a code but was short for...we'll never know because M threatened to have Bond killed if he uttered one more syllable. "Life is gone with just a spin of the wheel" is what happens after Bond's victory when he chases Le Chiffre and wrecks to avoid killing Vesper.

References to old films include "Angels fall from blinding heights" as there have been multiple high-altitude jumps/events. Diamonds cut through harder men in "Die Another Day" after Bond set off the explosives in the diamond-laden briefcase.

I think it's a great song on it's own, but it's also the best Bond song in a long time.
