To me it looks as if he is singing about a girl who had a depression and died maybe because of drugs or commited suicide. She tried to stay strong but in the end she didn't manage. The part with "And they were all born pretty in New York City tonight And someone's little girl was taken from the world tonight. Under the Stars and Stripes" says that in hollywood (=New York) they all seem perfect and pretty and she didn't see herself like that (<- depression) and then she died because of reasons metioned above. The song is so beautiful <3 :) |

I think this song is about a girl he had a relationship with. but he needs to let go of her, although he loves her, because she inflicted him to much pain. i think you can see it best at the last verse: If I was walking through a sad art gallery And you were driving through the night I'd feel rather alone and ill at ease Beneath the brilliant showroom light he doesn't know her feelings, and he has let her go and feels rather 'alone and ill at ease' instead of being with her and taking the risk, that she could let him down If I was flying on a plane above your town And you were gazing at the sky Somehow I'd feel intact and reassured If you began to wave goodbye i think it could have been, that he met her after they split up and she ignored him or was with going with another guy or something like that. he feels 'intact and reassured' because he knows he has done the right thing of letting her go. does that make sense to anyone? :) |

I think the song is about a event that made him break down but then when that what made the event happen, stopped appering, he became calm and faught against that what strained him. I don´t know if it´s right like this and I´m not really able to describe what i think, but that´s the best what i could bring down xD |
