Within Temptation – The Cross Lyrics 11 years ago
There are a couple of things that make me think (as a Christian) that this song isn't from Jesus'/God's point of view. Firstly, the phrase "YOU can purify it all" - Jesus/God is the one who purifies - imperfect, sinful human beings cannot purify ourselves - that's why Jesus died on the cross (and rose again!)

Another big thing is the phrase "Release me from this cross after all these years" - again, Jesus is God; he doesn't need releasing from the cross (besides, he rose from the dead agges ago, quite literally). It sounds more like the singer is someone burdened with responsibility (somewhat like Jesus' responsibility to die for the sins of mankind) or knowledge?

I'm leaning more towards mhorton's interpretation - it seems more as if they're simply using Christian (specifically Christian, not religious in general) symbolism (it does make for a good, dramatic song! :D )

Just my thoughts, it's an awesome song.

Relient K – Getting Into You Lyrics 11 years ago
The only problem with thinking this song is applicable to romantic love as well as God's love is that it's contradictory: we're supposed to love God above EVERYTHING else - our birth family, our friends, our lover - so lines like "you're essential to survive", "the kind of person you deserve to worship you" and "I'm going to love you with my life" can only really apply to a Christian's relationship with God. Personally, I think "worshipping" your partner would be going a bit too far, because when you worship something, and you say you NEED it to survive, you make it the centre of your life. But the thing is, if that something is another person, you're going to be disappointed; they're a sinner, an imperfect, broken being like you - and they'll probably only break your heart (simply because they're not perfect) if you make them the only thing in your life. God's the only perfect being who deserves our wholehearted worship! Yes, you should love your partner very strongly, but you need to know that there're going to be times you'll let each other down because you're both human - but unlike you and God, you and your lover should be on more or or less equal footing, and if yo just focused on them you'd remove God, other friends, and family from the picture.

Just my thoughts. ^.^ Sorry for the ramble, I'm pretty sure I repeated myself a few times there.

"There's nothing new under the sun" is a fairly constant refrain from Ecclesiastes, a book from the Old Testament.

OneRepublic – Secrets Lyrics 11 years ago
My interpretation of the song and the music video would be that he's so tired of everyone living behind a mask, not being who they are, not meaning what they say, not being honest - "I'm sick of all the insincere"; perhaps his life is boring because of this - because he has this mask, this certain self that he puts on, that others expect of him - his life is boring; he can't say what he wants to, and he can't share what he really thinks, what he really wants, with others. I suppose I gravitate towards this interpretation because I can really empathise.

Skillet – My Religion Lyrics 12 years ago
I think what they're trying to say is that all he needs is the trinity (God/Jesus/the Holy Spirit) - without making it into a fashionable/ attractive-looking "religion"/religious thing. You can be a Christian without being in a church, without all the traditions and formal things.

Just my two cents :3

iTunes got the titles mixed up, so I think the person that put these lyrics up must have been going off the titles in iTunes without looking at the booklet. >.>

I agree with you that not every musician writes songs cryptically about God, but please could you respect the fact that some of us don't think Christianity is "all that silliness". And about Jesus being copied off something in an Egyptian pyramid, do you really have solid proof of that? How do you know it's not the other way around? Please don't talk of people pushing their religions onto other people when you're being a little bit pushy with your own opinion on the matter. Thanks. C:

OneRepublic – All Fall Down Lyrics 13 years ago
"he loves you if you're heterosexual, white, rich and you donate lots of money."
Sorry, but that's not true. God loves you no matter who you are. And I suppose people think that OneRepublic songs have "religious meanings" (it would probably be Christian meanings, btw), because the members of the band are Christians. But that doesn't mean that they have to be seen that way, nor that every one of them have meanings relevant to God/Christianity.

Shouldn't that be memories?

I think you're right; that's what I thought, too, especially since the song says:

"How long, 'til we call this love?"

Within Temptation – Say My Name Lyrics 13 years ago
Listening to this song (which beautiful and very, very sad, in my opinion), I personally believe it's from the point of view of someone who has an aging lover/loved one with dementia, (or simply a lover with dementia/ another psychological/ mental illness that causes memory loss), and they're heartbroken because their lover/loved one barely/ doesn't remember anything/ most of what they've done together in their lives.

Like a lot of people, I think the second last verse/part of the song is the saddest, most touching, and very fitting.

"Please say my name
Remember who I am
You will find me in the world of yesterday
You drift away again
Too far from where I am
When you ask me who I am."

@Evenstar:

It is indeed
"As I walk the room, there before me a shadow
From another world, where no other can follow.
Carry me to my own, to where I can cross over..."

I have the Only Time Collection and therefore the lyrics for this song, so that's how I know.

I really love this song, it's so sad sounding. I reckon EdwardBryce and Rekkuta are both right in their interpretation of it.
